Urbanization is one of the hot issues being focused by people in 21st century. The important characteristics of urbanization are spatial structure evolvement and spatial sprawl of the utilization of the urban land, causing the restructuring of the regional structure of urban, and changing the economical structure,social structure,functional structure of the urban etc. With the reform and opening and economy developing, the people of Hohhot city is increasing, and Hohhot develops from middle city to big city, the built-up area is increased 9300 hm~2 from 1990 to 2005. Therefore, analyzing the current situation and spatial structure evolvement of utilization of the urban land has important meaning to urban planning and management of Hohhot city. Based on the stated above, selected the data of high resolution remote sensing imagery Quick Bird, extracted the current information of urban residential land,industrial storage land,road land,land of being constructed and to be constructed,green land,agricultural land,water and other land by human computer interaction mode, the dynamic change and changing tendency of utilization of the urban land are studied systematically by using variation model,fractal model,markov forecasting model. The results show as follows:(1)In 2006, the urban residential land area of Hohhot city is 3101.24hm~2, which is the biggest part and proportion is 28.88 percent; then the other land (27.97 percent),agricultural land(16.36 percent),industrial storage land( 10.76 percent ),road land ( 8.69 percent ),green land ( 4.68 percent),land of being constructed and to be constructed(1.64 percent) and water(1.01 percent)take turns.(2)Between 2002 and 2006, patches occupying only 8 percent of the study region transform among each types of land utilization, which can classify into quick-speed change,medium-speed change,low-speed change and slow change according to the changing speed. The land of quick-speed change includes residential land and agricultural land; the land of medium-speed change is only the other land; the land of low-speed change includes industrial storage land and road land; the land slow change includes land of being constructed and to be constructed,green land and water.(3)From 2002to 2006, the average fractal dimensions of boundaries of urban land utilization types in Hohhot city can be ordered as follows: road land>water>residential land>the other land>agricultural land>land of being constructed and to be constructed>industrial storage land>green land. And the order of average stability indexes: green land>industrial storage land>land of being constructed and to be constructed>agricultural land>the other land>residential land>water>road land. The results show that the green land is more stability and stabilization of road land is weak.(4)Based on the current situation of utilization of urban land in Hohhot city in 2006, the situation of urban land utilization in 2010 is forecasted by using markov model. The results show that the structure of utilization of urban land of Hohhot city changes obviously. In 2010, the residential land area of Hohhot city is 3414.00hm~2 (31.81%),industrial storage land area is 1077.12 hm~2(10.05%),road land area is 994.05hm~2(9.24%),land of being constructed and to be constructed area is 174.78hm~2(1.61%),green land area is 506.51 hm~2(4.72%),agricultural land area is 1553.12hm~2(14.46%),water area is 108.09 hm~2 (1.01%)and other land area is 2910.59hm~2 (27.10%).It is obvious that the residential land area,road land area and green land area of Hohhot city are increasing, and industrial storage land area,land of being constructed and to be constructed area,agricultural land area,water area and other land area are decreasing.
