In recent years, the study of light propagation in anisotropic media has attracted agood deal of attention. In particular, anisotropic materials have been used to made opticdevices, such as polarizers, compensators and switches etc. With the invention of negativeindex material, the study of negative index material, or left-handed material has recentlyreceived much attention in the literature, from theoretical to experimental points of view.In this thesis, we theoretically investigate the refraction properties of waves in hyper-bolic uniaxial left-handed material and the vectorial properties of paraxial beams propa-gating in uniaxial left-handed materials. The thesis is composed of five chapters, amongwhich are, Chapter 1 is a survey, Chapter 2, 3 and 4 are the introductions of my ownwork, Chapter 5 is a conclusion. The thesis is structured particularly as follows:Chapter 1: We give an introduction of the research background and the researchpurpose of my thesis.Chapter 2: Relying on dispersion equation, the refraction angles of wave vector andenergy flow of TM wave at the interface between homogeneous right-handed material andhyperbolic uniaxial left-handed material are studied. In a large range of incident angle, the two refraction angles are not sensitive to the incident angle. The smaller the opticalaxial angle is, the more evident the phenomena is. The range of the optical angle is given.Chapter 3: Based on the method of coordinate rotation and the boundary conditions, the amplitude and power transmission coefficients are derived rigorously. It is foundedthat the power transmission coefficient is always satisfied t≤1 even though the amplitudetransinission coefficient T>1. At the same time, the larger T is, the smaller t is whenT>1 is satisfied.Chapter 4: The vectorial properties of paraxial beams propagating along the opticalaxis of uniaxial left-handed materials are studied. On the basis of a suitable plane-waveangular spectrum representation of the electromagnetic field, we obtain the analytical expressions of the optical field. The longitudinal component is expressible in terms of thefirst correction of the transverse field, Moreover, the transverse field varies when eitherthe polarization or the distributing of the initial electromagnetic field is changed. But thelongitudinal component is only dependent on the initial distribution of the field.Chapter 5: summarizing the contents of the thesis.
