Potentilla flagellaria is a typical clonal plant with stolon. The clonal population and the quantity dynamics of their module as well as the reproduction strategy are the important parts of plant population ecology research. The P. flagellaria clonal population distributing in the Songnen grassland was studied,and we observed the season dynamics of petiole length and the total stolon length as well as pattern of spacer length,compared the numbers of maternal ramets,daughter ramets and single ramets as well as the yearly dynamics of total biomass in 3 years (2003,2005,and 2006). Furthermore,we analyzed the correlation between population quantative character and the community's quantative character. The main conclusion to be as follows:(1) The petiole length of P. flagellaria clonal population increases gradually with the growth,and reaches the maximum in August. The season dynamics of petiole length and the season dynamics of community height changing are synchronous, which shows phenotype adaptation significance at some extent. In the unit area the total length of stolon decreased. The P. flagellaria stolon elongation and its space extension as well as the formation of"latent ramet"mainly complete in the early growing season.(2) The average spacer length in P. flagellaria stolon presents the"short - long - short"distributed pattern. The distributed pattern of spacer length possibly contains complex information about the population behavior of looking for food,daughter ramet estabilishment as well as the spatial expansion strategy.(3) There was a certain change of P. flagellaria in the maternal ramet,daughter ramet,single ramet and the total biomass,in which daughter ramet and total biomass had an extremely significance (p<0.01). This kind of large scale change among years may be related to the interspecies interactions in the community.(4) The relationships between maternal ramet,daughter ramet,total biomass and the community density and the total biomass had an extremely significance or positive significance. The spacer length and community height was significant. The highly closing-community condition possibly is advantageous for P. flagellaria maternal ramet colon reproduction as well as the stolon growth.(5) We presume that P. flagellaria clonal population take the reproduction strategy,which expand the space and establish the basis of latent daughter ramet in the early growing season,and complete the daughter ramet growth and estabilishment in the later period.
