Kmeria septentrionalis Dandy belongs to Magnoliaceae, Kmeria (Pierre)Dandy, it was listed among first category of protected wild plants in China (in1999). The populations of K. septentrionalis only distribute in Luocheng andHuanjiang of Guangxi province, Libo of Guizhou province and Maguan ofYunnan province in China. The majority of these populations are scattereddistribution, only the population of Mulun National Nature Reserve inHuanjiang is centralized distribution, the area of which is 3 hm~2 and the growntrees are 200 individuals. This paper researches on the floweringphenology, breeding system, species of visiting insects, visitation rate ofpollinators and their foraging behavior, the course of florescence, flora structure, fruiting characteristic, harmfulness of animals and germination characteristic ofseeds ofK. septentrionalis, and analyzed the factors resulting in the endangeringof K. septentrionalis. The results show that: (1) Florescence weather that isdisadvantageous to pollination, small number of foraging insect species, lowvisitation rate of pollinators, lack of effective pollinators, and the existence ofthe competition of plants at the same flowering time are the important restricted factors in the pollination of K. septentrionalis; (2) There is sharp difference offruit yield in high-yield and low-yield year for K. septentrionalis, andharmfulness of insect have great disadvantageous influence on the regenerationof K. septentrionalis, these are also the important reasons of endangering;(3)The red aril of K. septentrionalis Dandy has strong inhibition on seedgermination, seeds with red aril are difficult to germinate naturally, and theirgerminations require a long time, these are disadvantageous to thetransformation of seeds to seedlings, and the regeneration and continuance ofpopulations. Meanwhile, arils and endosperms of K. septentrionalis Dandy arerich in oiliness, and the predation of rodents to seeds is serious. The inhibition ofbiology characteristics and the predation of animals are the main reason ofendangering. Finally, this paper puts forward some countermeasures for the conservationof K. septentrionalis.
