Geographic information system (GIS) is a new integrated subject. It could combine all kinds of things with geographic positions and related views, and has powerful geographic data processing functions. The application of it is not only penetrated into every field, but also is used widely in modern military war.The embedded GIS is the combination of GIS and the embedded system. It is the offshoot and extension, the makeup and development of the traditional GIS. With the sustain of hardware platform, many kinds of of operation system and the application of GPS (Global Position System), the embedded GIS has been applied into the modern national defence and the economic construction.The research topic of the paper involves computer science, such as embeeded GIS developing, embedded system comstructing and computer graphics, such as the principle and data organization methods of geographic information system, the visualization of digital maps, location based on global positioning system (GPS) and target tracker. The paper aims at vehicles'practical demand in air defense system. Using ARM processor as kernel and making use of Vxworks operating system's hard real-time ability and high reliability, military electronic map system based on GIS is developed in the VxWorks's integrated development environment Tornado and multimedia package WindML.Firstly, the paper gives the definition of embedded system, and introduces the development process of embedded system, embedded system hardware platform and embedded system and VxWorks. Then the paper simply introduces construction of the embedded software and hardware environment, including constructing hardware environment and software environment.The design of military electronic map based on GIS is the main part. Firstly, the paper discusses the outline of GIS, gives the opinion of oriented-object technique applied into man-machine interactive system, designs the appropriate data model of GIS and gives geographic element data structure. Finally, the paper realizes graphical display module, and underlines realization principle of rapid ramble.The paper principally emphasizes discussing positioning of GPS and object tracker in the military electronic map. Firstly, the paper introduces the characteristic and composing of GPS. Then the paper is represented based on the data flow of GPS signal, the first step is the extracting of GPS information, including serial port programming and extracting of GPS data, the second step is coordinate conversion which is one important of processing GPS signal, the third step is map matching technique, including analyses of GPS error characteristic and map matching based on Kalman filter.Finally, the experiment is performed upon the system, and it performs well. It's proved that the system can realize basic functions. It has some practical value.
