| As we all know, military plotting plays an import part in military action and operational control. Traditional plotting softwares, however, couldn't meet the need of commanders' any longer, especially with the development of computer plotting technologies. What they need is such a kind of plotting that can be seamlessly integrated into an existing system, providing the system with multiple functions besides plotting, such as editing and situation deducing. In addition, it is required that a plotting software should be portable and extendable enough, only so can it be widely used in as many applications as possible. Obviously, COM-based military plotting, which will be discussed in this thesis, can solve these problems with great ease.The following is what we have done in this thesis:1. Explain what is military plotting, and how import it is in MGIS. Point out what a COM-based military plotting system should look like in the near future, just after a careful review of the development of related technologies, including computer military plotting, software programming and so on.2. Discuss COM and its characteristics in detail, how to implement a COM-based application, and how many methods can we use to do this. Introduce Object Oriented Programming (OOP) into military plotting, and explain how it will help to COM-based plotting.3. Bring forward the concept of military plotting module, combined with technologies of software engineering and COM-based programming. Introduce the general ideas of how to design and implement a COM-based military plotting system, whose main modules are symbol libraries, COM interfaces, and interactions between plotting and map.4. Design and implement an ActiveX-based military plotting module. This module, providing all kinds of functions for commanders, is just the result of above researches, and needs to be improved in the future.
