Land resources are non- regenerative. "Cherish and rational use every inch of land" is the basic policy of our country. In the background of the rapid development of China's economy in 21th century, exploitation and use of the land, every kinds of transferring and alteration are more frequent, so, investigate the land resources quickly and correctly for the programming and government of the land is of great significance. Now, 3S technologies are widely used for the investigation of the land resources. But in the investigation of large scale, for example 1:10000, the main method is the combine of manpower and automatism and it's inefficient. The reason is that the precision of automatic extraction is low and this is a problem which 3S technologies have been confronted with.A technique of combining veins and grey level for extraction of land-utilization information is proposed based on the characteristics of Quick Bird images.Firstly, Matrix of the intergrowth of grey levels is researched deeply and the appropriate veins formulas are found.Secondly, introduce a method of extraction in multi-steps, extract construction information using the multi-spectral data and eliminate the infection of shadow and produce better results. The precision is more than 90% and the miscarriage of justice rate is less than 15%.Thirdly, when extracting the water information, the panchromatic data is used. And the precision is about 90% and the miscarriage of justice rate is less than 9% when the disturbance of the shadow is eliminated. And the visual effects are good.It proves that combining veins technology is an advisable method for the information extracting of the high-resolution images.
