Sediment concentration in the small watersheds in runoff are the important parameters in investigation of soil erosion, and are the basic required data of dynamic monitoring network for water loss and soil erosion. The real-time, fast, and accurate measurements of sediment can help to understand the dynamic soil erosion processes and to automate the monitoring practice of water loss and soil erosion.Oven-dry method has long been the standard method for determining sediment concentration in the small watersheds. The accuracy of the measurements, to a great extend depends on sampling processes. The method is known as a time consuming, labor and resources demanding technique. Thedevelopment of a system for measurement of sediment is of great importance. This research was conducted to use the infrare instrument to measure sediment concentration. A determination system of sediment in the small watersheds was developed and used in ShanXi of Beijing Forestry University experiment base. The following details are the outcome of this study.Firstly, the feasibility of infrare to determine sediment concentration was studied theoretically and experimentally. Theory indicated the feasibility of using infrare method to measure sediment concentration. Experiments showed very good correlation between sediment concentration and infrare readings with determination coefficient great than 0.99.Secondly, a determination system of sediment in the small watersheds was developed to determine sediment concentration, with the integration of infrare technique, electronics technique, mechanical engineering technique and computer application knowledge. And this system has the functions such as automated position and sediment concentration measuring, automated data acquisition, analysis and management. Finally, a data acquisition and analysis subsystem, which is designed to demarcate the device and analyze the data, dramatically reduces the volume of work, raises experiment eficiency.
