The 21st century is a network century, and an age that the technique of internet reaches into all subjects and all aspects. Any applied science tending to develop itself and laying aside the technical application of network makes a mistake without doubt, so is the cartography. The technique and means of cartography which has being developed all the time undergoes the transform of handwork mapping to digital mapping, and electronic map to grid map. For one of the key problems in the cartography, cartographic generalization is facing a new challenge. So the study of automatic cartographic generalization in the web environment is of the utmost urgency.This paper mainly studies on the research of on-demand generalization in automatic cartographic generalization with the web environment. It proposes a new method using graphics instance to get user's demand of generalization, and combines web technique and cartographic generalization to solve the very problem of Web technique in the cartographic generalization from the web environment which is paid great attention by experts of cartography. All these work will be of great significance to solve the automatic cartographic generalization problem in the web environment.The major work implemented is presented as follows:1. It analyzes the background of automatic cartographic generalization, domestic and foreign research status and current problems.2. The theory of web service is researched, and the significance of the combination of web technique and cartographic generalization is analyzed.3. A general designing frame of automatic cartographic generalization in web circumstance is presented, and on the basis of frame, a scheme of on-demand web cartographicgeneralization——on-demand web generalization based on web service is put forward whichcombined with the characteristic of the technology of web service, and then the system structure of on-demand web generalization is analyzed in detail.4. A user demand getting model is founded, which attempts to get user's demand information under the support of instance database which is able to provide expression graphics instance of user information demand with suitable modeling.5. An original system is designed, which validates the feasibility of the method of getting user demand information through graphics instance.
