With the fast economic developments and the rapid increase of population, Shexian County has witnessed significant land use changes during the last decade. With view to further study on changes of land use in Shexian County based on RS and GIS from 1988 to 2000, The paper draws three following conclusions:(1) There are obvious changes in Shexian County during the study period. According to the magnitude of the land use change, the greatest is the woodland, and then, the paddy field and the dry land. And there're few changes in water area land use. The land use types in the county have been transformed between each other during 1988 to 2000. The greatest transition is the woodland, which is transformed into meadow; and the second one is the paddy field, which is into meadow and construction of housing and building; and the third is the dry land, which is into meadow; and the last is the meadow, housing and building, which is into paddy field. The taxis of land use change rate is meadow> construction of housing and building> wood land > dry land >paddy field>water area. The velocity of land use change is faster, the ratio of which has reached to 1.39% as to the land use change velocity. The changing speed of meadow is the fastest, while the changing speed of the paddy field and the dry land is relatively slow. There're obvious differences in land use change rate in different counties. Eight villages and towns are above the average of the whole rate in Shexian County. They are Sanyang Village, Sencun Village, Huicheng Town, Bei'an Town, Shendu Town Xiaochuan Village, Wangcun Town, Changgai Village. The changes of wood land in four villages are greater than the average of the whole study area as to regional difference of land use change. They are Sanyang village, Sencun village, Changgai village, Xiaochuan village. The changes of housing and building in six towns are...
