In this thesis, the vegetation landscape patterns of Jilin province is studied by use ofLandsat satellite imagery in TM and ETM+ plus ERDAS and ENVI image processing systemand ArcView GIS. For this mission, FRAGSTATS, a computer program aiming at analyzingthe landscape patterns, is also used to calculate the necessary regional vegetation landscapepattern indices which are defined to delineate and evaluate the landscape elements andstructures. The chief research results are listed as follows.First, the vegetation landscape structures of Jilin region are studied. Result show thatvegetation landscape pattern of this area appear a mosaic vegetation landscape compoundwhich includes five types as forest landscape and plantation landscape in dominance, thengrass landscape, marsh landscape and desert landscape. Generally, the vegetation landscapepatterns of Jilin region have a forest landscape matrix in east or plantation landscape matrix inmiddle and west which ranges continuous spatially. Grass landscape with features of mosaicand fragment can be seen all over the whole area. Marsh landscape and desert landscapeappear gregariously in some part of the research region. Then, the spatial pattern of existing vegetation landscape of Jilin region is studied. Thesignificant feature of direction zonality of regional vegetation landscape from east to west isproved. Generally, the vegetation landscape pattern of Jilin shows obviously three parts aseast, west, and ecotone of these two parts. The east forest landscape area owns simplelandscape types which are dominated by terrain obviously. Plantation patches in branchesinlays in the forest landscape matrix on valley among hills. The middle ecotone, with forestand grass as potential vegetation, is filled with cropping landscape presently. Thus the varietyof vegetation landscape is low in this ecotone. The west area has a compound landscapestructures which are formed by cropping landscape, grass landscape in dominance, and marshlandscape, desert landscape. Marsh landscapes form connective natural corridors in longstripes. However, the extent of fragmentation is severe while the diversity is rich in this area.It suggests the fragility of the vegetation environment in the west.
