Ion mobility spectrometry(IMS) is a new technology for detecting chemical weapon, drug, explosives and environmental pollution. Compared with other analytical tools for organic compound, it has advantages of small volume, high sensitivity, broad applicability and high speed. It also can work under atmospheric pressure and room temperature. So that it must be a kind of instrumentation to have broad applications. The paper mainly introduce the IMS that was designed independently in ourlaboratory. As is different with the majority of using radioactive Ni ion source, we use the laser to take the ion source, because laser ionization can choose suitable wavelength to ionize the target molecule, and it also can raise selectivity and increase linear range. The main content and achievements of this paper include three items as follows:1. The paper gives an introduction to the principle and system configuration of a laser ionization source for ion mobility spectrometry firstly, and then designs the key parts of the IMS(Drift tube) using Solidworks. The calculated parameter of the drift tube is given subsequently. The paper also introduces the designing process of the other parts of IMS.2. Having done some simulative experiments to IMS in SIMION .It mainly contains the relation between the radius of ion collector and signal intensity, and the affection of voltage of the drift tube and flight time of the ions.3. Optimizing the finished IMS primarily, some important results are given including the affection between electric-field intensity, the length of drift tube, theflow of drift gas , the flow rate of sample and signal intensity.
