At present, Digital Elevation Model (DEM) has been catching people' s attentions more and more, and its application has developed rapidly in geography and its related research. With the development of society and the projects' demands for the high accuracy of DEM, the original data have gradually been insufficient for our needs. The development of geography needs more accurate DEM to serve us. The method of interpolation is one of the key technologies in the research of acquiring higher accurate DEM, which is put into practice widely, and given the added significance of achieving the more accurate DEM based on original data.Based on analyzing the traditional approach of interpolation and its application, this paper summarizes the limitation of current research, and presents an idea, which applies the theory of SFS using information of remote sensing imageries, to build a model for enhancing and updating the original DEM. This research tries to find the relative-gradient information of elevation on the surface by analyzing surface images of remote sensing and calculating the information of shading, and then obtains more accurate data by combining the original DEM. By this way, this research not only makes a more widely application of SFS theory, which developes rapidly in Machine Vision, but also opens a new way on the research of interpolation, and further more provides a more reliable method for DEM updating of the provinces. The main content and work can be summarized as follows:1. Based on the principle of SFS, this paper has analyzed and summarized the basic resolvent of SFS arithmetic, and has discussed its relative merits. Then it chooses a appropriate one according to the features of geography.2. Combining with the features of earth' s surface, the interpolation model of DEM which based on SFS arithmetic and single remote sensing image has been built. In addition, this paper has simplified the complicated method of SFS, which make it more appropriate in the application of Geography.3. Based on the thought of previous model, this paper has designed and realized a experimental system for the interpolation model using matlab7. 0 and VC++6.0,in which simulated and real terrain data are implemented and tested to validate the feasibility and validity of the idea in this paper.
