Vegetation cover status quo survey is an important survey for national situation and power. It is also a basic work which remote sensing technical was applied to earliest and researched most on. In the past, macro land use classification used NOAA/AVHRR data mainly. How ever, MODIS has better spectral and spatial resolution, and it has seven bands designed for land cover specially. MODIS has many advantages and great application values for land use classification.Qinghai province is one of the five biggest pasturing areas in China. The pasturing resource is very important natural resource which play a important role in vindicating ecosystem balance and is important substance foundation in stockbreeding. At present, pasturing resource which effected by human activity and natural evolvement is severe degradation, fertility continually decline, vegetation cover degree reducing, sluice ability and keep natural environment weakening, environment deteriorating. As a result, durative steady developing stock raising and pasturing area people' standard of living were influenced. Under this position, proper understanding variety rule and character of pasturing, studying cure countermeasure , realizing scientific manage and reasonable using pasturing resource, dynamic inspecting and forecasting the variation is important. These measures have a far-reaching meaning to economic enhance and society developing. In this study, MODIS 16-day composites of 2004 are used for land vegetation classification research in Qinghai Provinces. The study use MODIS data and VI principle and VI long time serial variation to distinguish the investigation area' vegetation cover. Finally, making off 15 kinds and the overall accuracy is 73.71%. Using NDSI to distinguish snow from water and applying DEM to distinguish different vegetation in different attitude. The result from this study shows that the MODIS data is performing well in land use classification and it has highly practical value and application potential to macro-monitoring of land use situation. Moreover, the new approach for large area land-use survey provided by this study has good application foreground.
