The coast of Tianjin is characterized by typical silt, and the length of thecoastline is about 150 kilometers. Most of the embankments adopted rigiditystructure of building stone and concrete, which caused a lot of questions such asenvironmental deterioration, high cost of the engineering maintenance and so on,and made it unsuitable for the rapid economic development of the coastal areas andthe request of the environment improvement. This subject adopted the followingcomprehensive research methods: in-situ observation of the archetype, testengineering, physical model test, numerical simulation calculation and so on. Itdeveloped corresponding technique research around the existing problems of theconstruction of the embankment of Tianjin and the concrete requests of theextension of the large-section embankment technique. Furthermore, the subjectdiscussed the following aspects: the reasonable plant areas, survival rate, effect ofenergy dissipation and desilting promotion of the spartina anglica, kind selectionof the salt tolerant plants such as the tamanx chinensis, and the suitable growthareas and soil conservancy and consolidation ability of the root system. Thus wededuced the design thoughts which combined the plant and rigidity slopeprotection together, and also enhanced the technical and economic index for thelarge-section embankment structure, which supplied good technique support to theextension. This project emphasized the in-situ observation of the typical coastal tides, and combined the physical model of the wave and numerical simulation of flowtechnique together;what's more, we also got the special value of the tide and waveand established experienced formula for the forecasting of the near coastal area ofTianjin, and determined the bank segments of washout and siltation of the coastalareas. We developed large-scale in-situ tests of planting, and through theaccumulations of observations of many years, we solved the technique difficultiessuch as the growth area of the spartina anglica and the tamanx chinensis andprotection effect of the embankment. Finally we concluded the slope protectionplans which are suitable for the combination of plants and building blockspossessed mud coastal specialty, which not only satisfied the request of theprotection, decreased the investment of the engineering but also afforested theenvironment of the coast, which settled a good basis for the environmentimprovement of the coastal areas.
