The trend of the communication in the future is All-optical communication. And the key technology of the optical fiber communication is DWDM technology. With the development of telecommunication technology, the requirement of communication will turn to broadband service charactered as high speed IP data and multimedia data. And they require the optical network based on the technology of DWDM technology to provide larger capacity to transmit more information. So optical fiber communication is developing to higher speed, larger capability and longer distance. As dispersion and nonlinearity, Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) also tamper with the performance of the optical fiber system, and it is one of the important factors to limit optical fiber system's capability and distance. With the development of EDFA (erbium doped fiber amplifier) and NZDFS, the effects of dispersion, attenuation and nonlinearity on performance of WDM system are minimized. So Polarization Mode Dispersion is becoming more important and is paid more attention now. The Statistical Characteristics of Polarization Mode Dispersion and its Influence on the Propagation of Light Pulse are studied is this article. The details show as following: (1) The importance of PMD and the foreign and domestic status of studying PMD are expounded. (2) The basal theories about PMD are expatiated. And several popular methods of the PMD measurement and compensation are introduced. And their advantages and disadvantages are compared. (3) The Jones Transfer Matrix is deduced from the coupled nonlinear Schr?dinger equation. Statistical characteristics of the first-order PMD are simulated by Jones Transfer Matrix method. And the light pulses which are propagating with PMD are also simulated by solving the coupled nonlinear Schr?dinger equation. (4) The effects of PMD on different modulation formats in system are discussed theoretically. And their different effects are simulated. (5) The influence of PMD on a 8×40Gb/s WDM system with DCF is studied, and it is also validated by software "OptiSystem".
