The Design And Implementation Of Mapping System Based On ArcObjects

Mapping is a very important part of the geographic information system (GIS). It is also an essential requirement of the map product department. With the development of the computer science, main tasks in mapping are not handwork. What the people expect is automatic, powerful and intelligent mapping instead of multifarious handwork, and their map effect must be as same as possible. So, in this paper, some technological issues on the design and implementation of mapping system based on ArcObjects are discussed. .The structure of this paper is as follows. Firstly, the objective and significance of this research is introduced. Secondly, three kinds of component technology at present and their characteristics are presented. After evaluating all these three component technology, the solution based on COM is chosen. Thirdly, powerful functions of ArcGIS and the framework of ArcObjects based on COM are introduced. In the end the design and implementation of mapping system based on ArcObjects is given. The system contains two different but relative parts: one is thematic mapping, some examples are thematic maps about population, economics and education based on statistic data of Henan Province at year 2002. Another is output of topographic maps with standard scales from 1:10,000 to 1:500,000. The automatic generation of map decoration features with different scales is the main task in map output.
