This paper is focused on the appraisal of groundwater resources in the south of China. Based on the systematic analysis of hydrology, weather, geology, social economy and the mechanism of the circulation of groundwater, the methods of mean distribution of well and groundwater exploiting modulus are adopted to compute the quantity of groundwater resources, which could be exploited in plain area. In order to provide the new hydro-geologic parameters for four principal water resources developing regions in the Mianyang, the experiment of water pumping is carried out in each region. The distribution and application of groundwater in shallow stratum are also studied in this paper. This region is abundant in rainfall, with the average rainfall about 1233. lmm in several years; The groundwater is comparatively rich, but the spatial and temporal distribution is uneven affected by the recharge sources, namely richer in summer, lower in winter, and richer in mountainous region but lower in plain. The total quantity of groundwater, which could be exploited in Mianzhu is about 33899. 18 X lOV/a, including 27368. 3 X 10%7a in plain and 6530. 88 X lOV/a in mountainous region respectively. Recently, the exploited quantity in plain is about 27830X10V/a, which has met the balance of exploit and recharge. Three kinds of water quality samples, gained from the different stages of groundwater quantity, are analyzed, and the results shows that, surface water of the region has been polluted, while the quality of groundwater is fairly good, but the pollution in some area is serious.
