Leymus chinensis, Stipa grandis, Artemisia frigida and Caragana microphylla are the typical representatives of rhizomous grass species, bunchgrasses, half-shrub and shrub respectively. In order to study the mechanism in response to different cutting treatments of non-structural storable carbohydrate in rangeland plants of different life-type variation. The compositions and changes in contents of their non-structural storable carbohydrate were analyzed by HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography), and different cutting experiment in different period were designed, aiming to explaining the acclimation mechanism of nutrient storing and using in different life-type variation plants.Results showed that: Carbohydrate is the basic substance for perennial forage sprouting in spring and re-growth after cutting or grazing. Leymus chinensis is the superiority stirp or building-stirp of typical grassland in china. Rhizome of Leymus chinensis is the main carbohydrate reserved tissue. In the experiment with two treatments (â… ,cut on May 30; â…¡, cut on July 21 ), we measured all kinds of water-soluble carbohydrate using HPLC(High performance Liquid Chromatography)and starch content using traditional chemistry method in rhizome of cutting day in 12 days later by selecting single-superiority stirp of Leymus chinensis. The results demonstrate that starch is the most important stored carbohydrate, the minor is the soluble-carbohydrate including fructan and manntiol, which content occupied over 81.23% and 87.72% of the soluble-carbohydrate. Starch, not fructan or mannitol, is used as the direct material and energical source for re-growth after cutting.
