During the development of Chinese modern philosophy, there is a deepening course of thoughts about science from Wei Yuan to Yan Fu. And there is also a course of westernization. We should analyse the course carefully from several aspects such as how western scientific culture affects Chinese intellectuals, how it is accepted by them, how the intellectuals response on it, how the responses affect China( including thoughts and behavior) and so on. This thesis will discuss Hua Heng-fang's Ge Zhi ideas. Through analyzing his ideas, I hope to understand the status of Hua Heng-fang during the course of westernization. This thesis has four chapters.Chapter one will discuss his ideas on Jing Shi Zhi Yong. On base of Jing Shi Zhi Yong, Hua Heng-fang broke the traditional ideas on Dao and Ji( technology) and established the status of science again. And he also tried his best to integrate Dao and Ji.Chapter two will discuss his ideas of Ge Zhi. He tried to expound some new thoughts about Ge Zhi from objects and process.Chapter three will discuss Hua Heng-fang's ideas of relations of different scientific knowledges. From the laws of objects, he thought that Ge Zhi's emphasis was the relations. So he studied the relation between mathematics and other scientific knowledges firstly.Chapter four will discuss more about the relations of different scientific knowledges. Through it, Hua Heng-fang hoped to establish a system of science in China. So he translated The Elements of Geology.I wish to make a detailed impression of Hua Heng-fang's ideas through the four chapters. And I also wish to explain clearly how studying the science impenetrates the development of the whole Chinese modern culture.
