The quantitive research of spatial distribution character of landslide is significant to prevent landslide disaster, and it can have base for developing landslide evaluation and forecast. In recent years, fractal theory has been developed in geological and seismal field, but is presently still in its beginning in geological disaster field. Therefore it is practically significant to incorporate these modern GIS techniques with fractal theory to develop a new way to study the spatial distribution character of landslide.The paper introduces Geographic Information System(GIS) and some functions of ArcGIS8.3.GIS as a kind of computer technology system owns powerful following functions: such as spatial data management and query, spatial integrated analysis and visualization. It can realize the best integration of spatial graphics, text and data. GIS technology has been widely employed in geological field. The paper also introduces fractal theory, especially cumulative total fractal theory, and its applications in geological field.According to the data of landslide in Chinchina Columbia, the fractal characters of spatial distribution character of landslide have been researched based GIS. The results shows that area of landslide with gradient, lithology and landuse is in second-order cumulative total fractal distribution. Their fractal dimensions have been gotten after calculation, and physical significance of fractal dimension is explored in this paper.The papers analyzed the relationship between the landslides area and its induced-factors at last.In conclusion, the paper brings forwards first that cumulative total fractal theory can be used. According to the data of landslide in Chinchina Columbia, the spatial distribution character of landslide is researched. It opens up a new method in research of spatial distribution character of landslide. The paper also points out that there are still many problems which need to be studied further.
