In this paper we start with introduction of the characteristics of regional circulation and the current research situation of the East China Sea. In the section followed, we introduce the POM model and propose the methods of the model renovation. Based on using global oceanic model and observational data, high precision remote sensing SST data, we build a three-dimensional Baroclinic Instability Numerical Model to simulate sea temperature, salinity, and annual oceanic circulations. Our model results comparatively match well to the observation data in seasonal temperature variation and seasonal vertical flow characteristics. Upon success of initial model testing, we simulate and analyze continental shelf circulations and their seasonal variations of East China Sea to answer questions regarding warm current paths and water transports, etc. Our numerical modeling results show that barotropic modeling limits revelation of dynamics of Kuroshio due to its baroclinicity nature, a baroclinic model is fundamental in studying the East China Sea circulation.
