With the advantages of: only one fringe needed, full field analysis, and high precision, Fourier transform profilometry (FTP) has been applied to3D shape measurement for dynamic objects in this paper. In this paper, we discuss all the details of this method, including theoretical analysis, filtering in frequency domain, calculating and unwrapping the 3D phase, and present some feasible projects and methods on how to obtain and deal with the shape information. We propose 3D shape measurements for dynamic liquid surface and solid rotator and design the systems respectively. We experiment in measuring both the dynamic vortex of liquid surface and the revolving vane of a home used electric fan. The results of our experimentation, the reconstructed vortices, and the freeze-frame of the rotating vane, show that FTP can efficiently deal with the 3D shape measurement of dynamic liquid objects and a high speed solid rotator with the micro-strobe flash. With the development of computer hardware, software techniques and high-resolution image grabber, the method we proposed for dynamicThis project was supported by National Science Funds of China.objects 3D shape measurement based on Fourier transform profilometry is more prospective in its application to elastic mechanics, flow mechanics, naval structural mechanics and mechanics of materials.
