Mansoor Sheik Bahae introduced a high sensitive single-beam Z-scan technique in 1989. It requires relatively simple experimental apparatus and simple analysis. Z-scan technique has been widely employed since it is reported. Now, it has become an important method used in studying the nonlinear optical characteristics .We describe the single-beam Z-scan method and how it can be deduced. The setup of automatic Z-scan system is established under this theory. It consists of four: parts: the program of automatic Z-scan control and data processing, multi-function data acquisition and control board, motorized translation stage, and joulemeter/ -powermeter. Based on the Windows98 system, the program of automatic Z-scan control and data processing is programmed in LabWindows/CVI environment. The experiment error can be eliminated by Automatic Z-scan system through dual channel scan. The multi-function data acquisition and control board, motorized translation stage are made in our lab. The joulemeter/powermeter is EPM2000 of Molectron Detector Inc..The palladium-octaisopentyloxy-phthalocyanine-doped ormosil glass (octa -PdPc glass) is prepared by the sol-gel method. The nonlinear coefficient of Octa-PdPc glass is measured by single-beam Z-scan method'. The result with automatic Z-scan system is more accurate than the manual measurement. In addition, self-interacting and optical limiting properties of octa-PdPc glass under the illumination of CW laser beam is also measured. Optical limiting properties and damage critical power at different wavelengths were investigated. Due to its largeoptical limiting effect and high critical power, this material could have potentialapplications in constructing optical limiters. The result shows that the optical limitingproperties and damage critical power were determined by self-diffraction and lightabsorption respectively.
