Debris flow is a new interdiscipline, themes of which have been continually explored. Studies of debris flow mitigation emphasize the application and have close relation to civil engineering and environment-protection.Due to the complexity, the essentials of debris flow are hard to be completely understood. In the paper, the basic theory and technique, present mitigation situation are summarized on the base of field investigation and documents. Three problems are specially selected out at present to study in details, specifically,(1) Systematic comparison between ladder-shaped groove and V-shaped groove. On the base of the data from over 50 debris-flow control works in the western China, the design elements, investment and operation function are discussed. The conclusion and advices can find their applications in designing in the future. .(2) GIS is first applied in China to regionalize debris-flow danger degree by using the model based on indirect index method. Traditionally, artificial regionalization expends much manpower and money, and the proposed GIS method is more easy and effective.'In regions lack of data directly concerning distribution of debris flows, this method is suitably to evaluate debris-flow's activity. Comparison between the resulted divisions and the actual distribution of debris flows shows a good agreement up to 80%. Through optimizing the model, better result will be gained. The method can also be used in regionalizing landslide and forecasting debris flow.(3) Establishment of the frame of countermeasure information system of debris flow. Data involved in the system is standardized in the first place, and all the data are divided into 23 groups such as location, area, and channel length of debris-flow basin. Countermeasure data from 21 debris-flow basins, selected out from 50 studied basins, are used in the information system. In the system, many types of data are integrated. Visualization of geographic information, topic inquiry and topiccartography are implemented. At last, interface for geography analysis module is provided.
