WebGIS is an important research aspect in GIS and gets rapid developments owing to the popularization of Internet in recent years.More and more attentions have focused on developing GIS function in the Internet,Worldwide Web,and private Intranets.WebGIS holds the potentiality to make distributed geographic information (DGI) available to a very large worldwide audiences. Internet users will be able to access GIS applications by their browsers without purchasing proprietary GIS software. WebGIS will make it possible to add GIS function into a wide rahge of network-based applications in business, government, and education. Many of these applications will be run on intranets within businesses and government agencies as a means of distributing and using geospatial data. The challenge of WebGIS lies in creating software systems which have platform independent and run on open TCP/IP-based networks. That is on any computer capable of connecting to the Internet (or any TCP/IP-based network) and running a Web browser.Java is a new program designing language originated by Sun Microsystemsjnc in 1995. Platform independent and facilitated network resource access are two most important superiorities. It is these features that cause Java to be the chief selection in network-based applications developments. WebGIS is a typical application. In this article, at first I introduce the research actualities of WebGIS. Then aim at the Java WebGIS, a whole architecture is posed and illustrated. Application technology is the leading part of the article, which is discusses in many key aspects in detail in the schemeimplements including GIS technologies, Java technologies and Database technologies. At the end a WebGIS system is implemented by using Java on the basis of scheme above.
