Nineteen quantity traits of a improved maize population NEAU-2 was studied by themeans of Triple Test Cross design .The objective of this study was to determine geneticvariability and genetic model of these traits clear gene action, which contribute to theexpression of heterosis, and inform the genetic potentiality of this population. This populationcould improved and exploited more effectively based on these analysis. The analysis of Triple Test Cross design suggested that, additive effect play an importantrole in all of the traits except filling property trait V1.Dominance effect is significant at plantheight, ear height, leaf number above ear, kernel rows and total leaf areas. Epistasis effect issignificant at plant height, ear height, ear length, kernel rows, kernels per row, kernels per earand kernels weight per one hundred. Genetic effect of plant height, ear height and rows isdetermined by all three kinds of gene effects. Genetic effect of ear length, kernels per row, kernels per ear and kerne1s weight per one hundred is determined by additive effect andepistasis effect. The other traits are determined by additive effect primarily. The estimates of genetic variations showed that, additive genetic component is very bigamong all traits. Most traits such as grain yield, ear length, kernel rows, kernels per ear, additive variation proportion exceed 85 per cent, especially in grain yield, it achieve 92.20 percent. So, for the improved breeding population which aims at raising grain yield, excellentinbred lines with high general combining ability will be selected at early period. In the courseof breeding, the population will be carried out recurrent selection and separate inbred lines tocross at the same time in order to fasten breeding progress.Genetic potentiality of the population suggested that, variation coefficient of grain yield isachieved 2l.2l per cent and expect genetic advance is achieved l9.29 per cent, it can be saidthat the population studied has great potentiality in grain yield.Correlation analysis showed that, grain yield is correlated with ear traits and shape traits,so these traits will be improved as grain yield be improved through their relationships.
