Recently, with the constant development of highway transportation construction, great achievements have been made. Highways have brought a wealth of economic and social benefits, which has seriously affected the ecological background environment. At present, research concerning the ecological environment surrounding highways mainly focuses on the western plateau and mountains area, and less on the Coastal Plain. The Yellow River Delta had become the long-term focus of attention with its scarcity of resources and ecological vulnerability. With the development of the regional economy, increasing highway construction has already caused the loss of primary wetland habitat and environmental degradation. This has become one of the tensions between delta economic development and wetland ecological protection. Traditional research methods for the study of ecological environments around highways were not only laborious and time-consuming, but lacked the proper tools to analyze the unique characteristics of the Yellow River delta. The paper will use RS-GIS to analyze and evaluate the ecological background of the Yellow River delta road area. Research results will have an important reference value for highway planning, design, construction, and operation, in addition to the ecological restoration of vegetation around roads in the Yellow River delta area.By analyzing the relationships between the road area's ecological background environment and highway projects in the Yellow River delta, the paper uses vegetation cover, biodiversity, terrain slope, soil degradation, and land use type for the evaluation indexes of the road area's ecological background. By integrating the methods of expert estimation, AHP, and gray relational theory; the paper proposes a calculation method which determines the weight of the various elements in the indexes. Furthermore, additional evaluation methods were used in the research of Yellow River delta ecological background environments. With the remote sensing (RS) and geographical information system (GIS) as a platform and the high-resolution Landset7 satellite ETM images from September 2004 as the basic source of information, the remote sensing image was enhanced through principal component analysis, NDVI calculation and band combination. The remote sensing image was then processed to obtain the basic data for the study region by the means of unsupervised classification and integration of the RS and GIS data. And, the information contained in the indexes was collected. The paper take evaluation and analysis about the indexes then draw a classification map of each index on the application of ArcGIS9.3 software. The ecological background environment of Yellow River delta was evaluated and analyzed, the comprehensive evaluation classification map of ecological background environment of Yellow River delta was produced. Also the paper put forward relevant suggestions combined with the existing problems.
