Left-handed material (LHM) is widely noticed because it can exhibit negative permittivity, negative permeability, negative refraction and some other miracle characteristics simultaneously, so the design and optimization on the structure configuration of left-handed material has been the most heated area. In this paper, based on the definition of left-handed material and typical left-handed transmission line model,the method of LHM design is researched and two new left-handed material structure configurations are designed.First of all, the method for realizing the transmission line model with left-handed material is analyzed. According to the relationship between electronic component and electromagnetic parameters typical left-handed material transmission line model is built. But it's impossible to achieve the typical left-handed transmission line model in reality, the right-handed characteristics always accompanies left-handed characteristics, so a more realistic model——the ideal compositing left-handed and right-handed transmission line model is proposed. To realize the lumping equivalence of the transmission line model, the relationship between two classic micro-structure and electronic component is calculated, whose equivalent transmission line model is gotten. Moreover, the relationship between size of some parts of the structure and equivalent electronic components is obtained.Secondly, based on the ideal compositing left-handed and right-handed transmission line model, using split ring resonator and metal wires array we propose a new double-sided micro-structure configuration whose size is easy to be adjusted. Both simulation and experiment results exhibit that left-handed characteristics appears in some certain frequency bands.The dependence of the electromagnetic characteristics on the size of the structure is also analyzed, and it's validated in simulation and experiment.Thirdly, simplifying the double-sided left-handed structure already designed, a new single-sided structure which is easy to be fabricated is proposed. The equivalent transmission line model of this structure is more similar to the ideal compositing left-handed and right-handed transmission line model, and the equivalent relationship is more obvious.The simulation and experiment validation shows that there does exist left-handed characteristics in some certain frequency range. Then the dependence of the electromagnetic characteristics on the size of the structure is obtained.
