| Agricultural foreign investment is an important way to actively allocate global resources and enhance the status of agricultural value chains. At present, the intensification of geopolitical competition highlights the uncertainty of agricultural foreign investment, and the severe food security situation in China and the world urgently needs to optimize foreign investment to enhance the status of the value chain, under this background,it is of great significance to study the layout of China’s agricultural foreign investment and the path to promote the upgrading of the value chain.Based on international investment and value chain theory, the paper adopts qualitative and quantitative research methods such as index measurement, econometric model, analytic hierarchy, social network analysis, and rooting analysis, and based on f Di Markets database,MOFCOM overseas investment enterprise directory database,Ti VA database,UN COMTRADE database and other data,in accordance with the logical idea of "theoretical mechanism research-pattern evolution characteristics-location layout optimization-typical industry analysis-typical enterprise analysis-upgrade path discussion".This paper analyzes the theoretical mechanism of agricultural foreign investment layout to promote the upgrading of the value chain, measures China’s position in the global agricultural value chain, studies the location characteristics and influencing factors of China’s agricultural foreign investment, evaluates the suitable investment location of each link of the value chain, and combines the case studies at the typical industry and enterprise levels, and puts forward the path and suggestions on how to optimize the layout of agricultural foreign investment to promote the upgrading of the value chain. The main conclusions are as follows: Agricultural foreign investment can enhance the value chain status of the home country through horizontal deep embedding and upgrading, vertical extension embedded upgrading, and value leap upgrading.Agricultural investment in different types of countries by developing countries can promote the value upgrading of home countries by improving industrial competitiveness. The agricultural investment in developed countries can promote the vertical extension and embedded upgrading of home countries through the reverse technology spillover effect.Agricultural investment in other developing countries can promote horizontal and deep embedded upgrading of home countries through the transfer effect of marginal industries.China’s agricultural foreign investment is concentrated in Asia and Europe, mainly in the production sector, and China’s position in the global agricultural value chain is relatively low.Chinese enterprises tend to invest in countries or regions with good economic stability and high purchasing power level, and the influencing factors of location selection in different links of the value chain are different.Western Europe,North America and Australia are the main advantageous regions,Southeast Asia,Latin American countries are more suitable for investment in the production process, and Asia and Europe attract investment in the post-production process. The research on the grain and oil industry shows that compared with developed countries,China’s grain and oil value chain has problems such as insufficient degree of innovation and faults in the upstream and downstream of the value chain, and it is necessary to increase investment in the production links of major grain and oil countries,as well as in the pre production and post production links of developed countries, and carry out a full chain layout for surrounding countries and countries along the "the Belt and Road".The research on typical enterprises shows that COFCO Group’s foreign investment in agriculture is resource and market oriented, committed to connecting global food supply and demand in a responsible way, strengthened control over both ends of the value chain, and achieved vertical extension, embedding and upgrading. Finally, based on the research and analysis of countries, typical industries and typical enterprises,it is necessary to take comprehensive measures from the selection of agricultural foreign investment subjects, industries, models and other aspects to promote the upgrading of the value chain.Compared with the existing research, the main innovations of this paper are as follows: At the empirical level, this study attempts to combine the layout of agricultural foreign investment with the promotion of agricultural value chain status, and explore the path of improving the quality and efficiency of agricultural foreign investment, which has innovation in the research perspective. At the theoretical level, the paper studies the path mechanism of developing countries’ investment layout affecting the upgrading of global value chain, demonstrates the possibility of developing countries promoting the rise of global value chain status by optimizing the agricultural foreign investment layout, and is a supplement to the existing foreign investment theory and value chain theory focusing on non-agricultural fields. |
