The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China emphasizes that promoting regional coordinated development needs to build a regional economic layout with complementary advantages and high-quality development, aiming at promoting win-win development in all regions by optimizing spatial structure and regional economic development layout. As the relationship between cities is becoming more and more networked, urban network has become an important organizational carrier to lead regional economic development, and the path of urban development needs to expand from within the city to between cities in order to gain competitive advantage in the context of networked development. At the same time, there is a turning point in the economic efficiency of agglomeration, and regional economy needs to find a new development path to adapt to the network form,so as to maximize the economic effect of agglomeration. Therefore, how to maintain the sustainable development of urban economy and enhance urban competitiveness in these changes is not only the focus of academic attention and the foothold of policy formulation, but also an important measure and strategic choice to achieve the coordinated development of regional economy. This study focuses on the impact of agglomeration economy and urban network on the coordinated development of regional economy from the perspective of externalities, mainly from the following five parts: The first part is the theoretical analysis. On the basis of the existing literature research and theory, this paper determines the research theme, clarifies the concepts of agglomeration externalities, network externalities, regional economic coordination and other related concepts, and based on the general framework of the classical theory of new economic geography, this paper adds the assumption that agglomeration externalities and network externalities are endogenous to the coordinated development of regional economy, constructs the theoretical framework and puts forward the basic assumptions of this paper. In The second part, taking the prefecture-level cities as the object of analysis, the spatial-temporal evolution pattern, spatial disequilibrium and spatial correlation of agglomeration economy in China are visually analyzed by using spatial statistical analysis method, and the spatial structure characteristics and node characteristics of urban network are analyzed by using social network analysis method. It provides data support and realistic basis for promoting regional economic growth and narrowing regional economic gap in the perspective of externalities. The third part sets up the empirical test model of agglomeration externalities and network externalities on regional economic growth according to the theoretical analysis, and goes deep into the essence from the appearance.By using the spatial panel model, this paper fully considers the effects of agglomeration externalities and network externalities on regional economic growth, and constructs a threshold model to test the threshold effect of infrastructure on the path of economic effects of agglomeration externalities and the threshold effect of accessibility on the path of economic effects of network externalities. In the fourth part, the mediating effect model and the Spatial Durbin Model are used, and the influence mechanism of agglomeration economies and urban network heterogeneity is fully considered, and finally the action path of agglomeration externalities and network externalities affecting regional economic growth is obtained. The fifth part explores the spatial coordination effect of agglomeration externalities and network externalities.Based on the relational data research paradigm, using the quadratic assignment procedure(QAP),this paper empirically tests the relationship between agglomeration externalities, network externalities and regional economic coordination from the perspectives of full sample, year by year, region by region, skill heterogeneity and so on,and draws the conclusion from the perspective of economics and puts forward some policy suggestions. The main conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)The level of agglomeration externalities is stable and rising, and there are significant spatial non-equilibrium and spatial correlation.Specifically, the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions show a ladder from high to low,and the level of agglomeration externalities of neighboring cities is similar. The degree of centrality of urban network shows heterogeneous characteristics in each echelon. The first echelon is mainly megacities and megacities, which are concentrated in the eastern region and provincial capitals, and the last echelon is mainly small cities in the western and northeastern regions,so the network centrality is highly correlated with the level of economic development. The density of urban network is steadily rising, the center potential is increasing year by year, and the overall performance of spatial structure is core-edge-periphery.(2)The effect of agglomeration externalities on economic growth is a significant inverted U type nonlinear feature, and most cities are still on the left side of the curve, network externalities on economic growth is a linear promoting effect.Network externalities play a linear regulating role in the effect of agglomeration externalities on economic growth. After crossing the vertex of the inverted U-shaped curve, the development of urban network externalities can slow down the inhibitory effect of excessive agglomeration on economic growth.(3)Infrastructure has a double threshold in the release of economic effects of agglomeration externalities.Under different threshold values, the marginal effect of agglomeration externalities on regional economic growth shows high-low-high,and after breaking through the bottleneck period of infrastructure, agglomeration externalities significantly promote regional economic growth.Reachability has a single threshold in the release of the economic effects of network externalities.Only when the threshold is broken, can network externalities play a role in promoting economic growth.(4)The upgrading of industrial structure and the skill structure of labor force play a partial intermediary role in the effect of agglomeration externalities on regional economic growth.Under the geographical adjacency matrix and geographical distance matrix, agglomeration externalities have a significant spatial spillover effect, and agglomeration externalities have a significant positive U shape effect on other regional economic growth;Function spillover and sharing scale play a partial mediating effect in the process of network externalities on regional economic growth, while industrial linkages do not play a mediating mechanism in the economic effects of network externalities.(5)The difference of agglomeration externalities among cities is not conducive to narrowing the regional economic gap, while the correlation and interaction among cities can significantly narrow the regional economic gap,and this coordination effect is increasing year by year.Considering the spatial heterogeneity, the effect of agglomeration externalities and network externalities on regional economic disparity in the northern region is more sensitive than that in the southern region, and the effect of agglomeration externalities and network externalities on promoting regional economic coordinated development in the eastern region is stronger than that in other regions. This study has the following three innovations:(1)This paper distinguishes and combines the agglomeration economy and network association,on the basis of taking into account the local agglomeration, the spatial category is further extended to crossregional analysis, considering the synergistic effect of the two on promoting economic growth, and using two dimensions of intra-city and inter-city to explore the impact of agglomeration on regional economic coordinated development.(2)Based on the perspective of new economic geography, this paper brings agglomeration economy and urban network into the theoretical model, discusses the impact of agglomeration economy and urban network on economic growth, and comprehensively analyzes the internal mechanism of agglomeration externalities and network externalities on regional economic coordination,so as to make up for the vacancy of existing research.(3)This paper improves the method of constructing urban network based on gravity model, expands the application scope of social network analysis in urban network research, and applies non-parametric methods such as quadratic assignment procedure to investigate the impact of agglomeration externalities and network externalities on regional economic coordination, solves the possible multicollinearity problem among variables, and provides more robust analysis results.Taking agglomeration economies and urban network as the research object, this paper explores the theoretical framework of agglomeration externalities and network externalities on the coordinated development of regional economy, makes empirical tests on growth effect, intermediary path and coordination effect, and on this basis, puts forward more targeted and implementable policy opinions, which are not only conducive to urban economic growth, but also conducive to regional economic growth. At the same time,it is also conducive to the formulation and implementation of regional coordinated development strategy.
