Student cultivation is the primary function of university.Under the background of further development of the knowledge economy with innovation as the soul and the increasingly fierce competition in international science and technology,the cultivation of college student’s innovative capability is undoubtedly an important topic that all universities must face and think seriously.From the perspective of the internationalization of higher education,taking study abroad of college student as the starting point,a mixed methods research was applied to study the influence of the exchange experience of study abroad on the development of college student’s innovative capability.Based on the investigation of the connotation,composition and testing of college student’s innovative capability,the self-made questionnaire and the tool of independent t-test was used to compare and analyze the innovative capability development of the two groups of students who went abroad and did not go abroad to study.Then,regression analysis was used to explore the relationships between the contributory factors of study abroad and college student’s innovative capability development,that is,the foreign campus environment and the learning state of students after going abroad.Furthermore,a qualitative analysis was made to explore the detailed factors influencing the college students’ innovative capability and an explanation was made to the result of the quantitative research.The conclusions are drawn as followed.1.Innovative capability is a multi-dimensional and multi-level complex including innovation consciousness,innovative thinking,innovative personality and innovative skills.It is the product of the interaction between individual factors and environmental factors.The testing of innovative capability should be based on systematic orientation.2.Study abroad is conducive to the development of college student’s innovative capability and its components as a whole.Colleges and universities should encourage students to participate in high-quality international exchange programs and establish a sound study abroad outcomes assessment system.3.There are differences of the influence of study abroad on college student’s innovative capability development in demographic characteristics.Study abroad has a significant impact on the innovative capability development of female students,students of humanities and social science majors;it has no significant impact on the innovative capability development of the students of science and engineering majors.4.Campus environment has an important impact on the development of college student’s innovative capability.Friendly and inclusive campus culture,equal and harmonious teacher-student relationship,inspiring and encouraging teaching methods,and diversified academic assessment methods are conducive to the development of student’s innovative capability.5.Student’s learning state has an important influence on their innovative capability development.Proactively learning attitude and value orientation of practical learning are conducive to the student’s innovative capability development.
