territory, which brings together rich and diverse regional cultural resources under the cultural pattern of pluralism and unity. After a long period of exploration and artistic practice,a diversified and differentiated cultural geography space has been formed in Chinese TV dramas.Since the 1990s,a large number of TV dramas with regional characteristics have appeared. At that time, the styles of "Beijing","Northwest","Northeast" and the theory of schools had become a common practice. These TV dramas with different regional cultural features not only present an external world, but also endow space with specific social and cultural significance through the construction of geographical imagination.Such prominent regional characteristics and cultural expressions have become important representations of the national cultural identity of Chinese TV dramas, while the more extensive, complex and multi-level cultural geography issues behind them are also an important field needing to be further studied in TV drama research. The traditional cultural geography studies of TV dramas adopt the regional culture study as the main method, and take regional TV dramas as the research object,to investigate the influence of different regional cultures on the creation of TV dramas, and to study the regional cultural characteristics and styles of TV dramas in different regions. This kind of linear investigation from regional culture to regional cultural characteristics of TV dramas tends to form a simple inference from concept to concept, and also ignores the spatial productivity of media texts, lacking the exploration of the cultural significance of the representational space constructed by the media. Therefore, this thesis shifts the research perspective from "region" to "space",and uses theories and concepts of cultural geography as an analytical tool to re-examine the spatial issues of TV dramas that have been neglected in the past from the perspective of region/district,attempting to expand a spatial cultural research path for TV drama research. This thesis takes Chinese TV dramas from 1990 to 2020 as research samples, and makes a cultural investigation of the spatial production and representation of TV dramas from the perspective of media geography, aiming to explore how TV dramas produce and represent space, and how they represent social reality and national cultural identity through the construction of geographical imagination.Specifically, the main body of the thesis consists of the following four parts:The first chapter takes a holistic view of the media space of TV dramas from the historical practice and creation reality of Chinese dramas, and explores the cultural geography factors rooted in the media space(communication space, production space, and text space),as well as points out the special influence and role in the production and creation of TV dramas. The second chapter focuses on the landscape-based construction of geographic space in TV dramas, and mainly discusses how landscape is involved in the narrative and significance production of TV dramas, providing a cultural interpretation of historical, social and aesthetic perception. The third chapter revolves around the relational interaction between image space and social space, and investigates the image production in three different scales of space:rural, urban and trans-regional(national),revealing the profound transformation of Chinese society and the complexity of cultural imagination hidden behind space imagination. The fourth chapter takes regional representation as a starting point to explore how TV dramas endow space with specific cultural significance through the construction of discourse,so that they generate different regional perceptions and construct a representational space for the audience to imagine the nation-state.This thesis argues that the cultural geography space of Chinese TV dramas is not only a cultural space to be described and outlined, but also an open and much-needed space for in-depth discourse criticism.By investigating the textual space of TV dramas as a trinity complex of landscape, space and place,it is possible to discover the aesthetic and cultural functions of geographic landscape, explain the social significance behind the spatial imagination, identify the national cultural representation written by localization, and then link geographic space with cultural studies to participate in thinking about contemporary Chinese social reality and complex geographic issues, expanding a new critical space for the study of cultural geography of Chinese TV dramas. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | TV drama, cultural geography, space, landscape, place | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
