The main research object of this thesis is the interactive relationship between the calligraphy of Wang Xizhi and his relatives and the aesthetic fashion of the Wei and Jin dynasties,which is investigated by using different kinds of research approaches including literature research,historical records,life history and iconography.In order to study the development and evolution of the calligraphy of Wang Xizhi and his relatives and the aesthetic fashion of the Wei and Jin dynasties,this thesis not only explores the causes,styles and ideas of the calligraphy of Wang Xizhi and his relatives,but also presents the evolution of aesthetic taste and aesthetic trend in Wang Xizhi and his relatives’ calligraphy,which supports the interactive relationship between the calligraphy art and the aesthetic fashion in the Wei and Jin dynasties.It is pointed out that the calligraphy,noble culture and aesthetic fashion in the Wei and Jin dynasties are interrelated,interdependent and integrated.The introduction provides a review on the current research status of the calligraphy and culture of the Langya Wang family in the Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties,laying the literary foundation for the study,and elaborating on the research purpose and significance,basic ideas,research methods,and innovative points of this thesis.The first chapter specifically explores the historical and cultural origin of the aesthetic fashion of the Wei and Jin dynasties,and then elaborates on the ideological significance,manifestation,and formation process of the main embodiment of the Wei and Jin style.It presents the transcendence and consciousness of the real society from human consciousness to literary consciousness,and then to aesthetic freedom.It is believed that the Wei and Jin dynasties were an era of artistic self-discipline,and it is pointed out that the rise and establishment of the noble clan were the main body of the formation of aesthetic trends in the Wei and Jin dynasties.Chapter 2 describes and analyzes the genealogy and changes in political and social status of the Langya Wang family,taking into account the social background and political environment of the Wei,Jin,Northern and Southern Dynasties.Chapter 3 elaborates on the achievements of the Wang family calligraphy in Langya,describes the inheritance and evolution of family calligraphy,explores the internal and external factors that led to the formation of Wang Xizhi and his relatives’ calligraphy styles,and thus analyzes the internal relationship between Wang Xizhi and his relativess’ calligraphy styles and the aesthetic fashion of the Wei and Jin dynasties.Chapter 4 analyzes the calligraphy works of the "Two Kings" as a model of Langya Wang’s calligraphy,sorting out their aesthetic style of advocating rhyme,and discussing the aesthetic taste of the calligraphy in the Wei and Jin dynasties from the perspectives of the calligraphy tools,the evolution of the calligraphy style,and calligraphy theory.Chapter 5 elaborates on the influence of Wang Xizhi and his relatives’ calligraphy,calligraphy studies,and aesthetic styles on later calligraphy,and analyzes their artistic value and aesthetic status.In a word,the research of Wang Xizhi and his family calligraphy groups and the aesthetic fashion of the Wei and Jin period shows that the diversified artistic ideas,mixed social forms and special historical opportunities make the calligraphy art of the Wei and Jin open a new realm of Chinese calligraphy aesthetic fashion,and the calligraphy art of the Wei and Jin is the focus of the noble culture and aesthetic fashion.
