The white papers of the Chinese government contain important discourses with Chinese characteristics, reflecting contemporary China and Chinese political philosophies. They constitute a significant component of China’s discourse system. In terms of discourses with Chinese characteristics, from the perspective of content, they reflect and construct the image of contemporary China while the distinctive features not only refer to the unique content but also point to the unique pragmatic characteristics presented under the corpus analogical methods.Discourse translation research breaks through previous flat research on translation of terms, taking a multidimensional contextual perspective on the phenomenon of international translation and promotion. This study elaborately discusses the translation and international communication of Chinese discourses, exploring their underlying patterns and laws across different layers and proposing targeted and actionable recommendations for bilingual transformation, monolingual optimization, and enhancement of effects. The theoretical significance of this study primarily lies in its argumentation and proposition for the integration of critical discourse analysis with corpus methodology. The practical significance is threefold.Firstly, regarding content supplementation, this study designs a composite diachronic corpus of the Chinese government’s white papers, serving as a crucial supplementary material for the translation research of China’s discourses and summarizing their primary themes.Secondly, about cross language rendering, based on a systematic description of parallel and comparable corpora,multi-dimensional translation improvement strategies are found, which include specific translation strategies and monolingual enhancement tactics.Thirdly, the translation and communication effects of discourses with Chinese characteristics are objectively examined.Based on the analysis of discourse strategies reflected by international media attitudes, improving measures are thus promoted. These measures include both strategies to reinforce positive discourses and suggestions to address shortcomings.Altogether, illuminating the entire process of translation and international communication, the study suggests a comprehensive plan for translation and communication improvements. This study has innovated in methodological design, integrating the theoretical foundations of descriptive translation studies, the Discourse-Historical Approach(DHA),and corpus methodology. In the first phase of the study, the core translation needs of contemporary China in white papers are distilled through thematic clustering.By identifying the main themes of the white papers, the study avoids the randomness of material selection, focusing on the translation issues of more representative core discourses.Subsequently, using a parallel corpus, the study examines the Chinese-English translation process from a bilingual transformation perspective. Then, with the aid of the comparable corpus, the characteristics of translated texts are examined through comparison. The third phase leverages programming tools, objectively examining the translation and communication effects of China’s discourses based on international media reports. It is found that the content of the Chinese government’s annual white papers can be summarized under three main themes:people-oriented,governance,and development, consisting of eight topics. This analytical approach, which transcends superficial titles and focuses on the substantive content, represents a tentative breakthrough in previous studies and proves beneficial in providing a concise overview of the white papers.Regarding strategies and techniques for Chinese-to-English translation, the thesis puts forth comprehensive methods in the realms of words, phrases, sentences, and texts.Simultaneously,it proposes a sustainable improvement plan through the establishment of lexical chunk databases and the refinement of a composite corpus. To enhance the linguistic quality of translated texts,it is suggested to increase lexical richness by using shorter words, rendering the discourse more vivid.Strategies for improving translation language also include describing more about what China has done to present its achievements with specific verbs. In terms of enhancing the translation and communication effects,it is emphasized that, despite variations in reception across countries, conscious efforts should be made to expand positive semantic prosody and foster favorable intertextual relations. Moreover, this thesis seeks to delve into the interdisciplinary aspects of translation criticism, aiming to improve the evaluation and feedback mechanisms to examine translation effects.
