The textbook is the most important pedagogical device in language teaching.As commercial,social and cultural product,the language textbook is in tension between several poles.The subject of this thesis is the socio-cultural representation of France in French textbooks published in China from 1949 to 2019 intended for Chinese students who learn French at university as a specialty.Considering the challenges that could involve the representation of the target country in a foreign language textbook with regard to the author of the textbook,the teacher and the learner,we mobilized a study both theoretical and empirical of three axes:diachronic and synchronic analysis of textbooks,study of the cultural transfer of authors and the commitment of publishers in the sociocultural representations of the target country,and the study of the use and appreciation of textbooks by teachers and learners.Our research is rooted in theories of sociology with key notions such as culture,representation,cultural transfer and mediation.It focuses on socio-cultural content and textbook discourse with content analysis and discourse analysis through a methodology based primarily on grounded theory and Discourse-Historical Analysis.Our main objectives are to discover the genesis of imaginaries about the target country displayed in textbooks from different eras,and explore the different ways of representing culture in a French textbook.Through the analysis of the textbook corpus,we found that the same cultural phenomenon can be described in different ways in the textbooks with the emphasis on different aspects:the image of France represented in the textbooks does not always reflect completely to the current reality of this country.It would be readjusted in the service of the source country and even transformed by the latter for ideological reasons.In short,it is reconstituted in a great complexity involving various factors:politics,the socio-historical context,collective values,etc.The results of the field research revealed that the textbook and the teacher are two important factors that influence the learner’s appropriation of the language and culture of the target country.If the textbook is the mediator conveying knowledge,the teacher preselects the contents of the textbook,completes it according to his own experiences and highlights knowledge that he considers important or interesting.The role of the teacher is,therefore,much more important than the textbook in the learner’s representation of the culture of the target country.Finally,we concluded our research by developing a diagram of the progression of foreign culture teaching,proposing two ways of representing cultures in a language textbook,and emphasizing the legitimate selection of teaching materials in the writing of a language textbook.All these constitute new ideas for the construction of the objectculture in a French textbook.
