| Southwest Associated University and Northwest Associated University were the two largest university consortia during the war period,and the two schools,one in the south and the other in the north,became a model of higher education in wartime China.However,for a long time,the public and academic circles have paid much more attention to SWU than NWU.Since the existence of NWU as a complete university consortium is relatively short and the origin of the university is relatively complex,research on NWU has only begun in the last decade,and there is much room for expansion.In fact,from the establishment of Xi’an Provisional University in 1937 to the demobilization and relocation of some faculties in 1946,NWU,which operated in Shaanxi for nine years,not only took root in the northwest during the years of beacon fire,but also made up for the uneven geographical development of modern Chinese higher education to a considerable extent,and left us spiritual and cultural resources worthy of deeper exploration.Therefore,it is the purpose of this dissertation to examine and reveal the historical existence and humanistic significance of NWU through the literary education and literary practices of its teachers and students.Based on the literary education,literary creation,and literary activities on the campus of NWU during its nine years of operation in Shaanxi(1937-1946),this thesis relies on historical archives,documentary materials,university histories,original periodicals,biographies,and memoirs of relevant personnel,and other historical materials to sort out in detail the literary contributions and literary achievements of NWU during the War of Resistance,taking into full consideration the professional origin,war development,political intervention,geographical space,and other factors.Based on factors such as professional origins,war development,political intervention,and geographic space,we aim to examine the successes and failures of NWU and the reasons behind them from a more objective and realistic perspective.Specifically,we aim to discover the intrinsic relationship between the curriculum and its faculty and the literary education of NWU from the teaching traditions of Beiping Normal University and Beiping University,which constitute the main institutions of literary education in NWU,and on this basis,we explore the benign interaction between the cultural community of teachers and students and the literary reproduction of the university.At the same time,the activities of literary societies,campus publications,and theatrical performances at NWU are objectively combed,and the literary character of wartime university campuses and the regional Northwestern influences on them are explored in light of the literary production of NWU students,especially the most fruitful campus poetry.In addition to the introduction and the rest of the thesis,this thesis attempts to examine and study the literary education,literary practice and literary creation of NWU as a whole through four parts: the tracing of literary education in NWU,literary education and literary activities in NWU,a study of the campus poet community in NWU,and the campus literature of SWU and NWU in the historical context.It is worth noting that although NWU was restricted and influenced by multiple factors such as wartime politics,personnel disputes,and humanistic geography,and was to some extent "marginalized",the literary activities and literary practices of NWU students and faculty were not only the spiritual candle of Chinese intellectuals under the special wartime ecological environment,but at the same time,from the historical dimension and cultural genealogy,the literary production of NWU and the literary qualities it displayed also had a certain positive impact on the occurrence and development of Yan’an literature,Qiyue Poetry,Jiuye Poetry,and Taiwan-Hong Kong literature.In this sense,the Northwest United University has become an important and indispensable part of the development of Chinese literature in the century. |
