For a long time, influenced by the western modernization development paradigm, industrialization and urbanization have been considered as the main path for rural areas to realize the transition from traditional society to modern civilization. On the background of profound transformation in the economic society, accelerate reconstruction in urban and rural space, elements, structures, patterns and organizational relationship in rural landscape also present the tendency to accelerate the changes and reconstruction, the rural space experiences the development from the past homogeneity to heterogeneity, and has rapidly changed its original appearance into a variety of ways by urbanization, specialization and specialization.Entering the new era of urban-rural integration and development, the transition and differentiation of rural space has become a hot topic in modern rural geography. The rural in western countries have experienced the shift from productivism to post-productivism,industrialization to post-industrialization,production space to consumption space, and has increasingly become a multi-agent,multi-functional and multi-dimensional space. The multi-functional perspective transcends the traditional dual linear transformation path produced by urban and rural dual economy structure. It not only has important theoretical value for exploring the pluralistic path and evolution rule of the multi-functional development of rural space, but also has practical significance for the scientific path selection of rural development and revitalization in China. It is helpful to reveal the change of human demand for rural regional production, consumption and ecological values in the process of social development, and to reflect the trend of characteristic development of rural space and its comparative advantages,as well as core values in urban and rural systems.Based on the technical route of "process-pattern-mechanism",use multi-source data such as integrating remote sensing images, land using data, economic and social statistics and emerging LBS data, with GIS spatial analysis, spatial econometric model and other research methods, and taking Suzhou as the case area, this paper carried out the measurement of the process of rural space transition, the recognition of types of rural space function differentiation, the exploration of the transition and differentiation mechanism of rural space. The paper involved eight chapters. The first chapter“Introduction",expounds the research background, defines the relevant concepts, clears the research purpose and significance, and introduces the main research content and the overall framework. The second chapter "A review of domestic and foreign research",combs relative research work in the aspect of rural space, rural transition and multi-functional rural at home and abroad,as well as the relevant enlightenment to this paper. The third chapter "Research Region,Data and Methods",presents the basic information of Suzhou, data applied and technical methods. The fourth chapter "The Background of Rural Space Evolution in Suzhou",outlines the economic and social changes in the developing process of urban and rural areas in Suzhou since the Reform and Opening-up,the evolution characteristics of rural space and the functional transition in different periods. The fifth chapter "The Process of Rural Space Transformation in Suzhou",builds the rural spatial transition measurement index system on the town scale around the rurality and urbanity, and reveals the spatial heterogeneity pattern and diversified path in the process of transition. The sixth chapter "Suzhou Rural Space Function Differentiation Recognition",based on the patterns of human activities reflected by LBS data,by identifying the differences in typical rural spatial living, employment and consumption functions, rural space differentiation type on the village scale is refined. The seventh chapter "The Mechanism of Rural Spatial Transformation and Differentiation in Suzhou" uses the spatial econometric model to make quantitative analysis of the driving forces that affect the transition and differentiation of rural space over different periods in Suzhou, and further refines the relevant dynamic mechanism theoretically. The eighth chapter "Conclusions and Prospects" includes the main conclusions, innovation points, shortage and prospects.Through the research, the paper proposes four main conclusions.First, since the Reform and Opening up,urbanization development in Suzhou has entered a high level stage after rapid growth.Economic and social development and rural space evolution have jointly promoted three transformations of rural functions, realizing the transformation from rural industrialization development,to rural urbanization construction, and rural spatial diversified value recognition.Second, from 1990 to 2015,the rurality-dominated areas in Suzhou shifted to areas along the Long River and Taihu Lake, while the urbanity-dominated areas continuously shifted to Kunshan city, and the rural space transition showed a remarkable process of heterogeneity.Twodimensional matrix further reveals the multiple paths in the process of transformation, the evolution relationship of the rurality and urbanity based on town scale is both competitive and collaborative, and meanwhile, the dominant transition between rurality and urbanity can be divided into four categories, namely enhanced, weakened, exchanged and maintained.Pluralistic paths in the process of rural space transition is of much more visualization to the past expression "rurality weaken, and urbanity strengthen is the general trend of rural areas".Third, the rural space with similar regional characteristics on the village scale is affected by human activities with different purposes, leading functions and developing paths are further differentiated.Based on the pattern of human activities reflected by LBS data, and the construction of rural space resident, employment and consumption function index,Luxiang village and Zhonganqiao village, which locate in the core area of rurality upgrading, are identified as two different types:the combination of agriculture and tourism, and the competition of various industries in the outer suburbs.Jishan village and Zhoujing village in the core area of urbanity upgrading can be identified as another two different types:modern industrial park, and urban community in suburban town.Fourth, with the help of spatial econometric model, this paper makes a quantitative analysis of the characteristic variables of rural space transition and differentiation in Suzhou, and summarizes the triple dynamic mechanism of transition and differentiation on the basis of analyzing the key driving forces. That is,the transformation of the regional environment, the motility of the behavior agent and the guidance of policies and measures, the dynamic changes of the structural combination among the three promote the transition and differentiation of rural space. The innovation of this paper includes two aspects.First,it constructs the twodimensional matrix from the evolutionary relationship between rurality and urbanity and the dominant transition of rurality and urbanity, revealing the pluralistic path of the transition process of rural space in Suzhou.Second, the application of LBS data into multi-function evaluation on the village scale and identification of multi-function differentiation of rural space based on human activity patterns is a constructive attempt of big data method applied in the field of rural geography.
