In recent years,proactive personality has become the focus of both individuals and organizations.Proactive people are characterized by their high degree of initiative in acting and changing the environment,while organizations are increasingly relying on proactive people to remain adaptive in the competitive environments.Happiness is the eternal pursuit of individuals.Individuals in organizations are faced with the dual goals of pursuing job performance and personal happiness.Unfortunately,while much is known about the work-and career-related outcomes which to improve organizational effectiveness,less attention has been paid to the subjective well-being of employees.Organizations should pay more attention to the employees’ subjective well-being.Proactive personality and subjective well-being have received growing research attention over recent years.In this dissertation,we aim to investigate the mechanism of proactive personality on individual subjective well-being,which also echoes the trend of positive psychology.This dissertation demonstrates the positive effect of proactive personality on subjective well-being from the intra-and inter-individual level respectively as well as the static and dynamic perspectives.In order to make the research more precise and comprehensive,this dissertation divides this topic into three sub-studies.Study 1 is an inter-individual level study,mainly investigating the mediating effect of interpersonal trust and the moderating effect of positive reciprocity beliefs in the relationship between proactive personality and life satisfaction in the Chinese context.Based on the static perspective of Study 1,Study 2 focuses on the mediating mechanisms linking proactive personality to dynamic subjective well-being.Study 3 raises concerns to the recovery mechanism of proactive personality on subjective well-being,which is converted into positive and negative affect,verifying the mediating effect of recovery level as well as the moderating effect of customer mistreatment.Study 1 investigates an inter-individual mechanism linking proactive personality to life satisfaction.Following the social exchange theory,this study examines the mediating effect of interpersonal trust and the moderating effect of positive reciprocity beliefs on the relationship between proactive personality and individual life satisfaction in China.We conducted two studies to test our predictions.Using a sample of 371 employees in a hi-tech company in China,Study 1a examined the association between proactive personality and life satisfaction,and the moderation of positive reciprocity beliefs on the relationship between proactive personality and life satisfaction.On the basis of Study 1a,with a sample of 244 young adults in China,in Study 1b we conducted a two-wave survey to examine the mediating and moderating mechanism between proactive personality and individual life satisfaction.The results suggested that proactive personality was positively associated with life satisfaction and interpersonal trust mediated this positive association.Positive reciprocity beliefs did not moderate the direct effect of proactive personality on life satisfaction but did moderate the indirect effect of proactive personality on life satisfaction via interpersonal trust.Study 2 focuses on whether and why proactive personality has an effect on dynamic subjective well-being.Based on the self-consistency theory,this study proposes that the relationship between proactive personality and weekly subjective well-being will be mediated by weekly rumination,mindfulness,and future optimism.In Study 2,97 participants completed a five-wave survey,and finally 97 questionnaires measuring inter-individual variables(proactive personality)and 388 questionnaires measuring intra-individual variables(weekly rumination,mindfulness,future optimism,and subjective well-being)were collected.The results supported the positive relationship between proactive personality and weekly subjective well-being.In the dynamic mechanism linking proactive personality to weekly subjective well-being,only weekly future optimism mediated the effect of proactive personality on weekly subjective well-being,while the mediation of weekly rumination and mindfulness on the association between proactive personality and weekly subjective well-being were not supported.Study 3 examines the recovery mechanism of proactive personality on subjective well-being,which is an effective supplement to Study 1 and Study 2.Drawing on conservation of resources theory,Study 3 demonstrates the mediating effect of recovery level in the relationship between proactive personality and positive/negative affect and the moderating effect of customer mistreatment.We collected data in three waves from call-center service representatives,and finally collected 151 questionnaires.The results showed that proactive personality was positively correlated with individuals’ positive affect,but not with individuals’ negative affect.Recovery level significantly mediated the link of proactive personality and positive/negative affect.Customer mistreatment moderated the mediating effect of proactive personality on positive and negative affect via recovery level.On the basis of existing research,this dissertation investigates the mediating and moderating mechanism between proactive personality and individual static and dynamic subjective well-being.In conclusion,our results provide evidence for the mechanism of proactive personality on individual subjective well-being in Chinese context,confirming the cross-cultural universality of proactive personality.The findings of this dissertation have significantly positive implications for both scholarly theory and management practice.Finally,we suggest future research might be carried out on several limitations of this study.In terms of research methods,more rigorous empirical research methods,including multi-level research design,multi-source data and longitudinal data analysis,can be adopted.Future research can pay more attention to the mediating and moderating mechanism between proactive personality and dynamic subjective well-being.In addition,besides the hedonia well-being,a further study can be carried out on the problem according to the eudaimonia well-being.
