| After Japan occupied Taiwan, its colonial administration was questioned by Japanese politicians from 1900 to 1930,and the words "selling Taiwan to France"were once rampant. In order to reverse public opinion, the "Taiwan government house" has systematically promoted Japanese intellectuals to visit Taiwan, dispatched colonial government offices at all levels to assist them in completing the Taiwan investigation, and encouraged them to write about the "modernization" of colonial Taiwan and exotic things in the south. In this study, the four most representative Japanese intellectuals of this period,Takekosi Yosaburo,Nakamura Kokyo,Sato Haruo, and Tokutomi Soho, all visited Taiwan on the spot and left a large number of written texts in Taiwan.Among them,Takekosi Yosaburo are politicians,Nakamura Kokyo is a psychologist,Sato Haruo is a writer, and Tokutomi Soho is a famous Japanese journalist.Although the four people have different identities and different perspectives, their Taiwan writings constitute the influential knowledge production on Taiwan by imperial Japan from 1900 to 1930,which together constitute the polyphonic relationship between the appearance of colonial Taiwan and the real image of Japanese empire colonization. As Sayid pointed out, literary narration is one of the main ties between "culture"and "imperialism".As a cultural form, literary works are extremely important for forming imperialist attitudes, frame of reference and life experience. In 1904,Takekosi Yosaburo, the representatives of the "theory of southward advance",visited Taiwan and wrote their travel experience as "Taiwan’s Ruling Annals",describing their experiences of gains and losses in the past ten years of Taiwan’s rule,in an attempt to respond to the doubts of Japan’s domestic and international community about the Japanese government’s ability to manage overseas colonies. In 1913,when Nakamura Kokyo started his trip to Taiwan,Japan ruled the colonial Taiwan for nearly 20 years, and the colonial regime and public security also gradually tended to stabilize. His psychological writing of Taiwan’s "dangerous exploration" publicized curiosity and excitement of adventure, which led the Japanese people’s blind enthusiasm for the empire’s"outward expansion".Sato’s visit to Taiwan in 1920 was precisely the period when Japan’s colonial rule over Taiwan was moving from military attache rule to civil service rule. His Taiwan writing presented the colonial Taiwan’s"cultural rewriting" and "prosperous dress up" and truly reflected Japan’s colonial ambition to expand Fujian and Guangdong. His Taiwan writing selected topics with more imperial curiosity such as "the uprising of the barbarians","the education of the barbarian children","the legend of the barbarian land","intermarriage of alien races","the melting of the barbarians into the water community" and was packaged as sentimental and personalized travel writing, attracting more readers with elements such as empire, exploration and privacy.Tokutomi Sohō’s visit to Taiwan in 1929 was at a time when Japan’s "assimilation" in Taiwan had turned to the propaganda of the so-called "unification of China and Taiwan" policy of "nationalization of the emperor".Tokutomi Soho’s shrine visits during his stay in Taiwan, the propaganda of the"Emperor’s Way Center" and Taiwan writing undoubtedly supported the transmission of relevant ideas. The four intellectuals visited Taiwan at different times, contacted different colonial spaces in Taiwan, and displayed different periods of Taiwan’s government house. However, they jointly interpreted the changes of Japan’s colonial rule policy and jointly constructed a pedigree written by Japanese intellectuals in Taiwan during the Japanese occupation period.Because the four intellectuals have different writing purposes and different value judgments about Taiwan, there is a certain gap between the colonial space they describe and the real Taiwan in historical materials.Based on a detailed interpretation of the four intellectuals’ series of Taiwan works, this paper looks for corresponding historical materials to prove it.Through this comparison and analysis,it is expected to restore a relatively real colonial space and carry out targeted rational criticism on it.At the same time,it attempts to clarify how the Taiwan image as the other image is replaced by Japan’s self-image.The "overseas investigation" of Japanese intellectuals, especially the "colonial investigation",plays the role of "eyes of the suzerain".The modern Japanese government created the "domestic subject" of the empire through the foreign country travel and tourism writing of Japanese intellectuals. This article collected and translated a large number of first-hand text materials, and analyzed the four intellectuals’ travel and writing in Taiwan,as well as their catering and interaction with Taiwan cultural circles.Restoring the relevant remarks of the colonial intellectuals from 1900 to 1930,the texts of the four intellectuals are allowed to talk to each other, showing the genealogy of colonial writings during the Japanese occupation period, and the influence of political power, ideology, cultural hegemony, etc.on the colonial writings of Japanese intellectuals is highlighted as much as possible in the demonstration process, thus trying to establish a dialogue between literature and different disciplines such as history, political science, anthropology, etc. At the same time, combined with the basic historical materials of various periods, combined with the method of historical textual research in the process of literary research, efforts were made to present the historicity of the text,to interpret the text with historical depth, and to dialectically and analyze the successful model of"capitalism" and "modernization" of Taiwan created by Japanese intellectuals. This paper attempts to clarify the origin and formation of Taiwanese "Japanese complex"and "Japanese identity" from the ideological origin. |
