Ancient Huizhou had an extremely advantageous geographical conditions that enjoyed a long historical pried of peace and lavish.The region existed as a prefecture since Qin and Han dynasties,and rapidly developed into a thriving central place under the profoundly influence of the three Major Migrations and several reformations of salt trade during Ming and Qing dynasties.A unique garden culture spawned and matured during this long tern process.Based on a systematic diachronic research on the construction phenomena in the administrative region of the ancient Huizhou and an breakthrough point about villeggiatura,the thesis aims to demonstrate the design theories and methods of the ancient Huizhou private gardens of 16 to 19 century,by restore the historical landscape scenery and construction characteristics with the consideration of social、economic and cultural context.To cope with the above research targets,the whole thesis was presented into 3 parts,basic methodology mainly depends on garden historiography,included literature textual review,field survey and GIS mapping.The first part is "Overview of ancient Huizhou private gardens in the 16 th to 19 th century".In this part,diachronic phenomena of private garden construction in different dynasties within ancient Huizhou area was tackled by the historical background,number and distribution of gardens,as well as the identities and thoughts of garden owners.It should be emphasized that the 16th-19 th century were the focus of this section.Based on the summarization of part one,the second part specifically elaborated 15 typical cases above construction background,owners’ identities,layout and garden elements,and provided schematic plans deduced from topological relation to summarize artistic conception.The third part is "summary",including two aspects of villeggiatura concept and construction theories and methods.The villeggiatura concept refers to the investigation of gardens in social and cultural dimensions.Starting from the contradiction between man and land and clan relations in ancient Huizhou grass-roots society,the interactive relationship between gardens,as the smallest unit of village living mode,and the overall environment of village living is explored: Including the inhabitation of the village,garden operation and inheritance,garden life,garden village construction and so on,depicting huizhou private garden village life picture.This is an important part of understanding the rural gardens.On the basis of the concept of villeggiatura,the principle of building is to further discuss from seven aspects,such as location,layout,mountain,water,architecture,flowers and trees,and boundary,so as to reveal the overall characteristics of Huizhou village gardens that are different from urban private gardens.Number and distribution of ancient Huizhou private gardens for villeggiastura have been sort and computed systematically in this thesis,and detailed analysis of important typical cases have explored more new design knowledge with the interpreted of historical documents that yet to be discovered.This thesis clarified some blind spots and misunderstood in previous studies,and summarized the characteristic of ancient Huizhou private gardens for villeggiatura in a grander perspective that took a wholistic consideration of social economy,cultural thoughts and constructing techniques.Strived to show the magnificent of ancient Huizhou private gardens constructions in a more comprehensive way.At the same time,this paper from the perspective of "village",the study of Huizhou private gardens is conducive to expand the research field of garden history,its gardening principles and the relationship with the overall construction of village environment,is of great significance to the current beautiful village construction.
