| In increasingly fierce global competition, innovation occupied the core position of China’s overall development, promoting the adaptive reconstruction of urban innovation geographic space.Knowledge innovation activities belong to basic innovation and play an essential role in shaping cities’ original innovation capacity.Similar to the general innovation activities, knowledge innovation activities follow geographic agglomeration laws.As a result, various spatial carriers within the city emerged. The rise of innovation network stimulates knowledge innovation activities to form a new carrier form of network cluster, which provides a new way to increase the efficiency of innovation geographic space. Therefore, construction of efficient knowledge innovation geographic space should reasonably guide the coupling of innovation geography-network agglomeration.Existing spatial studies on knowledge innovation activities are mostly from the perspective of geographic agglomeration and use attribute data to analyze the innovation characteristics and the planning response. The research from the perspective of network agglomeration is rare, let alone coupling relation between geography and network agglomeration. In conclusion, study on the agglomeration of knowledge innovation activities and the corresponding spatial strategies from multidimensional perspectives is key to implementing innovation-driven strategies and the construction of efficient innovation geographic space in Chinese cities in the future, which is also the origin of this study. This paper focus on Wuhan,a well-known science and education city in China, and takes its three core industries as samples. It analyzes the composition, organization pattern and interval structure of geography and network agglomeration of knowledge innovation activities and the formation mechanism of the carriers, discusses geography-network agglomeration coupling types of Knowledge Innovation Agglomeration Zones(KIAZs)and the corresponding formation mechanism, puts forward spatial optimization strategies of Wuhan’s KIAZs.This paper employs GIS spatial analysis, complex network analysis, econometric model and other analysis techniques, and uses the geographic location and co-authorship data of Chinese and English papers, and sociometric data, reveals following findings from the perspective of multidimensional agglomeration.Firstly,it identifies 15 KIAZs in Wuhan and puts forward that their formation is a process of agglomeration of innovation subjects in a specific geographical space through the functions of service sharing, element matching and learning atmosphere.Secondly,it identifies 19 network clusters in Wuhan and uncovers that the formation of clusters is influenced by the integration effect, synergistic effect and borrowing effect, including four stages of “node cultivating, linkage networking, pipeline formatting and effect exerting”.Thirdly,it clarifies Wuhan’s KIAZs into coupling-type,semi-coupling type and separated type according to the coupling of geography-network agglomeration and propose that the different combination of government and market roles in shaping innovation carrier by regulating space/innovation guiding factors is the reason for the formation of different coupling types.Fourthly,it identifies key guiding factors and proposes the specific spatial optimization approaches to promote KIAZs’ innovation efficiency.Taking the perspective of the network, this paper conducts research on the geography-network agglomeration of knowledge innovation activities at the micro-level,which is the content expansion and method improvement of existing research.Meanwhile, there are limited studies on the coupling relationship between geography and network agglomeration in innovation.Based on Wuhan’s KIAZs,this paper analyzes coupling types of innovation geography and network agglomeration, and reveals the formation mechanism of different coupling types from the perspective of the combination of government and market in shaping different form of innovation carrier. It provides theoretical support for improving the efficiency of innovation space, such as KIAZs.To meet the diversified requirements of urban innovation, this paper, based on the perspective of geography-network agglomeration, makes an in-depth analysis of the geography-network agglomeration characteristics of knowledge innovation activities, the formation mechanism of KIAZs and network cluster, and the spatial optimization strategy of Wuhan’s KIAZs.Findings of this paper enrich the spatial research of urban knowledge innovation to some extent, and provide a practical reference for guiding the efficient development of Wuhan’s KIAZs to the road of high innovation efficiency. |
