Three-syllable words are an important part of modern Chinese vocabulary.For a long time,the research on three-syllable words in academic circles is relatively weak,and the relevant research works are obviously less than those of two-syllable words and four-syllable words.However,three-syllable words are rich in quantity and expressive,which is a special collection in the modern Chinese vocabulary system,and should be paid more attention.In addition,in recent years,three-syllable new words have developed rapidly,and their proportion in modern Chinese has gradually increased.They have become an important syllable form in the production of new Chinese words.Therefore,the study of three-syllable words is of great significance and value.At the same time,in the field of second language teaching,there is also a phenomenon of not paying attention to the teaching of three-syllable words.Most teachers think that Chinese learners only need to memorize three-syllable words mechanically and know their meanings.Therefore,there is a problem of not paying enough attention to the teaching of three-syllable words.And through the survey,it is known that Chinese learners have certain difficulties in learning and using three-syllable words,and the current teaching and resources cannot well meet the needs of learners.This lack of research is in stark contrast to the urgent need for Chinese learners to learn and use three-syllable words.This paper focuses on the study of modern Chinese three-syllable words for second language teaching.First,from a quantitative point of view,we build a vocabulary database by ourselves.The statistics and analysis come from 6197 three-syllable words in "Modern Chinese Dictionary"(7th edition)and 1798 three-syllable new words from"Report on Chinese Language Life"(2011-2021)New word lists in the media,1387 three-syllable words in the classic syllabus of Chinese as a foreign language and textbooks.Then from the qualitative point of view,it specifically studies the morphological method,structural characteristics,semantic characteristics and cultural characteristics of three-syllable words.Discuss the significance of various researches on second language vocabulary teaching and coping strategies for related teaching problems.The research of this paper has the following findings:First,modern Chinese three-syllable words show obvious imbalances in the number of morphemes,internal structure levels,parts of speech,structure types,semantic construction methods and semantic categories.This unbalanced phenomenon is formed under the action of mutual influence and mutual restriction among various attributes.Second,on the whole,the three-syllable new words appearing in the media have the characteristics of imitation,innovation,interest,relevance and sociality.It is basically consistent with the attribute characteristics of most three-syllable words in daily use in dictionaries,but there are some differences.Thirdly,the three-syllable word formation methods are divided into three types:phonetic material type,lexical material type and mixed material type.The lexical material type is the most important way of word creation,and the transformation method(such as the replacement type and the analogy type)is a special way to create new words with three syllables.Fourth,from the perspective of structure type,compound three-syllable words are the focus of research.Its composition features are that the combination of morphemes is hierarchical and the means of combination are diverse.According to the analysis,the positive three-syllable words account for 76.88%of the total,and its research is the most complicated.Fifth,quantitatively investigate the semantic characteristics of three-syllable words from the perspectives of semantic construction and semantic categories.It is found that three-syllable words are mainly constructed by semantic combination,accounting for 72.18%of the total.The table "object"(including "biological","concrete object" and"abstract object")is the main semantic category,accounting for 75.80%of the total.Sixth,the cognitive analysis of the semantic characteristics of three-syllable words from the perspective of cognitive linguistics shows that the process of semantic construction of many three-syllable words is closely related to conceptual metaphor,conceptual metonymy and conceptual integration theory.Seventh,study three-syllable words with cultural connotations,such as color words,animal words,image words,and three-syllable words reflecting the philosophy of life.Way of thinking,social psychology and aesthetic taste.The significance of the research is as follows:First,from the perspectives of word creation,structure,semantics,and culture,the three-syllable words are systematically and comprehensively investigated and studied,which enriches the perspective of three-syllable words research.Second,using the combination of research ideas from multiple perspectives,on the basis of studying three-syllable words in daily use in dictionaries,adding emerging three-syllable words in the media as the research object,paying attention to the latest development trend of three-syllabic words,and researching content with the times advance.Thirdly,it is aimed at the study of three-syllable words for second language teaching,and examines the acquisition of three-syllable words by Chinese learners.Starting from the learner's errors,combined with the research results of three-syllable words ontology,it proposes some teaching strategies to make up for it.Some research vacancies in the field of second language teaching for three-syllable words.
