In 1973,He Youzhi, who was then the editor and editor of Shanghai People's fine arts publishing house, went to Beidahuang production and Construction Corps to experience life in order to complete the creation task of the comic book Chaoyang by the River, and created a comic book that was not very "successful" in his artistic career.Through the excavation, collation and textual research of He Youzhi' diary and manuscripts related to the comic strip "sunrise by the river",this paper reveals the real situation of He Youzhi' activities and creation in the Northern Wilderness period,as well as the special "Three Combinations" creative form of the comic strip Chaoyang by the River, and presents a set of unpublished comic manuscripts different from the published version for people.Through the interview, investigation and case study of relevant personnel, this paper makes textual research and Analysis on the comic book Chaoyang by the River and the manuscripts He Youzhi wrote to Hou Guoliang,LV Jingren,Liu Yulian and Han Shuli, and shows the creative characteristics of He Youzhi' "painting story" comic book and his creative concept of comic book, that is,"what to draw, how to draw".According to He Youzhi,"what to draw" means that painters should examine themselves, make clear their interests and hobbies, and know what they are most suitable for painting,so as to find creative themes on this basis“ "How to draw" is the most suitable artistic language for you to choose according to the content, tone and things you want to express. These two basic problems almost run through He Youzhi'creative life.He sticks to the road of comic strip, which is a conscious choice made after self-examination.The research and analysis of He Youzhi' unpublished diaries and manuscripts can be divided into three parts1.Textual research on the content of He Youzhi' Diary: through textual research on He Youzhi' diary, this paper expounds his activities and creation in the production and Construction Corps of Beidahuang in 1973,as well as the special creation form of "Three Combinations".2.Analysis of He Youzhi' painting manuscripts: including the manuscripts drawn for the creation of the comic strip Chaoyang by the River and the traditional Chinese painting works that have never been published. In these manuscripts,He Youzhi' creation characteristics of "painting story" are fully displayed, and he always keeps his keen power of artistic creation in the rigorous creation of comic strips by using the freehand brushwork of traditional Chinese painting.3.Textual research and analysis of the specific contents of He Youzhi' manuscripts: some of the handouts of he Youzhi during his teaching period in the Department of New Year pictures and comic books of the Central Academy of fine arts, the articles on his understanding and thinking about the creation of comic books, and the important letters between he Youzhi and Hou Guoliang,Han Shuli,LV Jingren and Liu Yulian.Through sorting out, textual research and analysis of historical data,a large number of original literature materials of he Youzhi are disclosed to people. To a certain extent,it fills in the lack of historical data research during He Youzhi' creation in Beidahuang. It also makes up for the lack of previous research on He Youzhi' artistic ideas and thoughts from the depth of historical research and the detail of case statement. These diaries and manuscripts of He Youzhi have also become the historical evidence of his thinking and adherence to the creation of comic books under the historical background of the prosperity and decline of comic books, conveying his spirit and character of continuous exploration on the road of artistic creation of comic books.
