The protection of intangible cultural heritage has long been the focus and priority of governments worldwide.This paper adopts the historical research methods and cultural administration research methods to examine and analyze the historical background,specific content,implementation,and effectiveness of protection policies of intangible cultural heritage in the Republic of Korea.The author intends to provide useful information for Chinese policy-makers to formulate intangible cultural heritage protection policies.The paper mainly consists of four parts.First,the author expounds on critical concepts in intangible cultural heritage protection policies and examines central issues in cultural heritage,intangible cultural heritage,and protection policies of intangible cultural heritage.Second,the author divides the development of intangible cultural heritage protection policies in the Republic of Korea into four stages:awareness-raising and preparation,formulation,adjustment and improvement,and maturity and Kim Dae-jung's strategic proposal to enhance Korea's cultural presence.The author then carries out a thorough examination of each stage.Third,this paper introduces and examines the protection policies of the Park Chung-hee,Chun Doo-hwan,Roh Tae-Woo,Kim Young-sam,Kim Dae-jung,Roh Moo-hyun,and Lee Myung-bak governments.The leading principles,implementation measures of different administrations are studied,and the influence of the changing principles on the policies is investigated to identify a clear path of policy formulation and development regarding intangible cultural heritage protection in the Republic of Korea.Fourth,this paper researches the lessons China can learn from the Republic of Korea.The author pays close attention to reviewing and analyzing the status quo of intangible cultural-heritage protection,policy implementation,achievements,and major challenges in China.On the basis of the comparative analysis,the author further explores the implications of Korea's practices for China in terms of intangible cultural heritage protection.
