Deixis is a common phenomenon of human language. It is a relatively important concept in pragmatics, and deixis of information in discourse is the key to understand and express meanings. The deixis in Chinese is the subject investigated in this paper, and the basic theories of text linguistics, pragmatics, linguistics, language philosophy are employed to make analysis of the research ideas that are developed from its forms to its functions, aiming to discuss the basic characteristics and textual function of deixis in Chinese deeply as well as the commonalities and specialties of the deixis "this and that" in Chinese (?/?) and in Korean ((?)) etc. problems.This paper falls into eight chapters.Chapter One is introduction, with focus mainly on the significance, methods and scope of the research and previous research findings; a simple summary and comment of the researches related to deixis are made to point out the significance of the research on deixis.In Chapter Two, the origin, definition, feature and theoretic basis of the research on deixis are discussed in details from the perspective of pragmatics, laying theoretical foundation for the further research in the following text.In Chapter Three, the reference and the deixis are discussed. Proceeding from the research on reference, this part analyzes the relativity and independence of the reference, concluding that there are two expression forms of the relativity of the reference:language reference and scene reference, and the definition of scene reference in turn basically conforms to the definition of deixis.In Chapter Four, the stress is laid on the on-spot verbal behavior, and the deixis in Chinese and on-spot verbal behavior are discussed from the perspective of pragmatics.In Chapter Five, the deixis is classified into four categories according to the referencing factor of the deixis:person deixis, time deixis, space deixis and language deixis, which will be discussed and expounded further in details.In Chapter Six, the theories and research methods related to the text linguistics are employed to discuss the cohering role of the deixis in Chinese in text systematically and deeply, mainly including the understanding of basic principles of textual cohesion, the conditions necessary for deixis as cohering elements and the conditions necessary for deixis as textural cohering words.In Chapter Seven, it expounds that not only there are commonalities between the deixis "this/that" in Chinese (?/?) and in Korean ((?)), but also they have their respective specialties. They are not completely equivalent. The differences and similarities of the characteristics of the deixis in Chinese and the deixis in Korean in practical application and its rules are discussed deeply through comparing the systems and functions of the deixis in Chinese and in Korean.Chapter Eight is the conclusion of this paper.
