Background:Autoimmune hemolytic anemia(AIHA)is an acquired autoimmune disease occurred when antibodies directed against autologous red blood cells.BAFF(B-cell activating factor of the TNF family),an important regulator of B-cell,has been observed to be over-expressed in a variety of autoimmune diseases.Interleukin 17(IL-17),an inflammatory mediator secreted by Th17 cells,is considered to be the mediator of certain autoimmune diseases. As a B/T cell-dependent autoimmune disease, the occurrence and development of AIHA may be related to BAFF and IL-17 pathway. We analyzed the expression of peripheral blood BAFF and IL-17 in AIHA patients in order to provide new ideas for the treatment of AIHA.Methods:We measured serum BAFF concentrations in 44 AIHA patients and 25 healthy donors. We also measured the serum IL-17 concentrations in 44 AIHA patients and 24 healthy donors. The clinical data and laboratory data(hemoglobin, percentage of reticulocyte, total serumbilirubin, and lactate dehydrogenase)were collected. The correlations between BAFF,IL-17 and AIHA were analyzed by Mann-Whitney U test,ANOVA,linear regression analysis and Spearman test. Results:Serum BAFF levels in AIHA patients were significantly higher than in healthy controls. There was no significant difference between serum BAFF levels in primary AIHA patients and in healthy controls.Serum BAFF levels in Ig G+C3+ primary AIHA patients was significantly higher than in healthy controls. There was no significant difference between serum BAFF levels in Ig G+C3-and Ig G-C3+ primary AIHA patients and in healthy controls, respectively.Serum BAFF levels in secondary AIHA patients was significantly higher than in healthy controls. There was no significant difference between serum BAFF levels in Ig G+C3+,Ig G+C3-and Ig G-C3+ secondary AIHA patients and in healthy controls, respectively. No significant correlation was shown between serum BAFF levels and serological parameters of AIHA patients. There was no significant difference between serum IL-17 concentrations in AIHA patients and in healthy controls. There was no significant difference between serum IL-17 concentrations in primary and secondary AIHA patients and in healthy controls, respectively. There was no significant difference between serum IL-17 concentrations in Ig G+C3+,Ig G+C3-andIg G-C3+ AIHA patients and in healthy controls, respectively. No significant correlation was shown between serum IL-17 concentrations and serological parameters of AIHA patients. Conclusions:Serum BAFF levels in AIHA patients was significantly higher than in healthy controls.Serum BAFF levels in Ig G+C3+ primary AIHA patients was significantly higher than in healthy controls.Monoclonal anti-BAFF antibody may be considered a new therapy for AIHA patients.Th17 cell pathway may not play a key role in the occurrence and development of AIHA.
