As the receptor of capital operations and the end of spatial production processes,the results of landscape architecture design activities are influenced by various social factors.Therefore,contemporary spaces of human settlemens gradually emerge the deiciency of meaning and emiton,and lose the ability to attract and engage people to adequately immerse themselves into the environments.On the other hand,the origin of theatrical space originates principally from the ritual activites.This space origin carries rich and deeplyrooted emotional content,which menas that theatre has the potential to help dealing with the problem of meaning deficiency of landscape architecture field.Firstly,this dissertation concludes that the two(landscape and theatre art)have the universality in the field of art by summarizing the main character of Total Work of Art.Moreover,they have close associations at multiple levels,such as: spatial form and imagery,means and methods of expression,and creative modalities.Secondly,by tracing the origin of the theatre spaces,the dissertation claims that the spatial form of theatre interacts with the natural environment and public spaces in many aspects.Thus,theatrical space can be concerned as the material medium to connect human beings and their spirit world.Therefore,“Theatricality” becomes a key concept to recognize the common characteristics both of theatre and landscape architecture.By reviewing the concept“Theatricality” in theatre and art fields,the dissertation concludes the core feature of “Theatricality in Landscape” as: from the view of design process,it is based on an intertextual relationship between script and space;from the aspect of space,it emphasizes presence and viewing behavior;from the concern of viewers' feeling,it provides an artistic experience in a specific time and space.On this basis,the dissertation choose Verfremdung in theatre theory to respond the design approaches of “Theatricality Landscape Architecture”.And the carrier is transformed into structure and space,corresponding to unphysical and physical levels in theatre.For the structural level,design methodology focuses on “program”.The steps of Verfremdung can be concluded as sifting,polarization,and enduing.For the spatial level,this research focuses on the control of viewers' movement.These specific methods can be summarized as:homogenization,amplification,interruption,reciprocation,and superposition.The core purpose of Verfremdung,is to create a sense of alienation in both tangible and intangible forms.The constructed form carries the intention from the designer,and the sense of alienation encourages viewers to generate thought and cognitive motivation.In this way,the viewers can reach a deeper level of intellectual and emotional emphethy within theatrical landscape spaces,during their wanderings and explorations.
