Bring Back The Charm Of The Old City

Because of its long history and a large number of historical and cultural legacy, Beijing was identified as the Historical and Cultural City in 1982. Although it should be strictly protected, successive political movements and economic reforms continuously damaged a large number of heritages, during which Beijing lost some historical features. As this phenomenon has become increasingly serious, people started to realize that saving the ancestral heritage is the cornerstone of sustainable development in a country or city.Beijing now is developed based on the old city of the Ming and Qing dynasty. As the heart of Beijing, the old city is the key area of conservation and development of Beijing, which achieved its functions as a "national capital, international city, cultural city, livable " city.In present, the conservation has reached deeply into the community. But how the plan will be effectively implemented will still be the main problems. Based on many years of working on the old city, the main work can be summarized in two ways:First, the understanding of conservation and development is quite different, so that it leads to controversy of different methods and results;Second, the lack of policies to the mechanisms and technologies makes it hard to promote sufficient work.Basing on the political trend, social reform, economic development, and major event, this thesis divides the history from 1949 into several stages, analyzing that in different stage the old city developed by inherent motivation. A conservation theory system and specific of practice process were also established during this time. More discuss are about the concept, policy, system, and technology of the core problems. According to current concept of Beijing towards a world city, a widely recognition of a target system and specific practice is discussed to renovate the old city part. In the end, (?)asing on the understanding of the main problem and the target system, six aspects of policies as "conservation and culture coordination", "strengthening conservation as a whole " are concluded.Lessons and ideas, as is mentioned in the thesis, is not only directly used in study on the planning for the conservation of historical and cultural cities, but also used to the working reference or guidelines. At the same time, we can upgrade ourselves through the study and reflection of the theory and practice.
