This thesis shows the value of textile and fiber art approaches upon the idea of ’public’ that enables an understanding of art as a participatory or collective involvement rather than as an object of aesthetic experience.To define what fiber art and textiles can contribute to a different idea to the public,site and the art,focus on the study is on projects that emphasize site reconstruction,people participation,social intervention and collective makings.It examines innovative projects in which artists used flexible and temporary materials like fabrics,thread and rope as way to reconsider the aesthetic context of the artwork and its permanent relation with the site.Fiber art based practices that go beyond the boundaries of the institutional framework and establish a new interconnection between place,material and public.Artworks that linked with the site not only to create visual impact of the space,but also to reveal the cultural or social identity of the place as well as make relations with the people.The goal of this study is also to identify the ways in which these practices interact with the site and the public.This will be accomplished by examining projects considered representative of the contemporary fiber art scene,that using public space as the work methodology.Also,to provide a better understanding of the public nature of fiber art,the whole study is based on extensive literature reviews,documentary analyses,and interview materials,photographic and qualitative surveys.Representing a dynamic and wide-ranging set of critical discussions and artistic practices,it provides a broader perspective of public nature of fiber art.As a point of departure,the first chapter focuses on the integration of fiber art and textile practices into urban and environmental spaces.It offering a viewpoint on the movements and approaches of fiber art in an architectural frame and in the public space.The chapter also examines how rethinking of the public function of art in relation to the everyday in the 1960th and 1970th,become a key prerequisite for the emergence of textiles and fiber based public art projects.Chapter 2 discuss the role of textile and fiber in creating new form of artistic ideas into the public space.To demonstrate the ability of fiber artworks to correspondents with the space,reflects to the site conditions and create an impact on the public,the chapter emphasized the role of temporality as an artistic strategy,site-specificity,and the potential of fiber art as a placemaking element.Chapter 3 analyze fiber art based projects in public space that emphasize viewer participation,collaboration and the performance of making in order to establish new relationships between the artist,viewer and artwork.By examination of study cases and literature,the chapter attempted to provide an understanding of what makes fiber art interactive and effective in public spaces.The last chapter deals more generally with social engaged fiber art activities in public spaces.It’s examines projects in which artists use textile and fiber practices as an artistic method to connect with the people,establish social relations,build new form of community and even address social issues.To give more deeply understanding of the social influence of fiber art in the public space,the chapter focuses on exploring projects that create social space and foster community participation and collaboration.This thesis concludes with a discussion of the research results and thoughts about the future direction of the contemporary fiber art practices in public space.
